Batwoman’s “Gore on Canvas” had me screaming! There are many reasons why. Alice and Ocean. Ryan and her finally admitting she’s hurt. And the introduction of a nonbinary character that I hope we see more of. But the one moment that really had me screaming and losing my damn mind was Sophie admitting that Kate is the love of her life.
Technically, I already knew this truth. But there’s something different about hearing it fall from Sophie’s lips. Even more so when she’s facing someone else wearing the Batsuit that Kate wore so many times. This is Sophie living her most authentic life, where she doesn’t hold back what she’s feeling because she’s never risking losing this moment again.
And it hurts so much to watch Sophie fight for Kate when we all know that she isn’t going to be back. Maybe for a long time, maybe a couple seasons, but it’s not going to happen anytime soon. All we can hope is that Sophie continues living her truth and being honest about who she is. No more holding back, no more hiding, and no more being anyone but herself. That’s how she honors Kate.
That’s how she honors herself.
Talking about more screaming; Alice and Ocean.
I always am so surprised and delighted by what Alice does when she’s on my screen. “Gore on Canvas” was no exception. We’re so used to seeing this one specific side of her that meeting Ocean felt like seeing someone brand new. Something that surprised Alice herself and left her wanting as many answers as she’s after. Knowing that Ocean is missing essential memories as well is going to lead to an even more interesting set of upcoming episodes.
A lot of the success when it comes to Alice is due to Rachel Skarsten. That woman is a phenomenal actor that wows every time she’s on screen. Yes, I know she’s evil and all that jazz. But I can’t stop loving her on my screen. A lot of it definitely has to do as well with the writing behind the scenes. They know how to utilize Skarsten and give her the opportunity to be batshit crazy, yet compelling.
Onto the Batwoman of it all. They’ve still got a long way to go when it comes to working as a team. And while I agree that they need to listen to Ryan and her instincts, it can’t be all by her lonesome. It has to be everyone listening to each other. Because Ryan might wear the suit, but Mary and Luke are her backup. They must work together to make it through the day.
That’s how they’re going to find Kate. Even Sophie and Papa Kane have to be in on this team work. They’re not all going to like working with each other but if that’s what it takes to find Kate again, then they better buck up and get working. And I’m going to be here for every single messy second of it all.
Additional Batwoman Thoughts:
- I would like a Mary Hamilton makeover asap.
- Ryan’s shoulder is getting hella nasty and they need to talk to someone about it, right this moment.
- Ryan’s ex being back in the picture is going to cause so much trouble.
- Would love to see more of Evan Blake/Wolf Spider. Not only are they a non-binary character and giving us the representation we want and need, they’re interesting as hell. They have a code we have no idea about but know this time around it had to do with Kate. And that could lead to an awesome team-up in the future.
- More Sophie trying to work through her feelings, please.
Batwoman airs Sundays at 8/7c on The CW.
