Look, we get it. Being a celebrity isn’t actually fun and games all the time. You have no privacy, everyone’s always all up on your business, and worst of all, everyone always has an opinion about everything you say and do, or worse, the things you don’t say or do.
Still, we’re gonna chalk up KJ Apa’s “jail” comparison during a conversation for Demi Moore for Interview magazine as unfortunate, to say the least.
The whole thing came up as he compared his time working on the movie Songbird to his time on Riverdale.
“I felt so free coming from a show where I feel like I’m in jail a lot of the time. With this character, it was like, ‘Wow, this is what it’s like to really express myself in a natural way.’ I wasn’t covered in makeup or hair products. I had long hair and a beard. I just felt free.”
Again, we’re trying to get where you’re coming from here KJ, but we could have maybe left the word jail out of it? Like, maaaaybe? Cause dude, your privilege is showing, and it’s making you less and less attractive.
“There’s been so much pressure in playing Archie,” he also said. “I’m so grateful for the show and its success, but at the same time, there’s a lot of baggage that comes with that success.”
Hey, no one would have complained if this had been the only thing you said, KJ! That actually sounds, yep, pretty normal. And he does go on to talk about something I really, really agree with, in regards to how fans feel this ownership over celebrities.
“I try and look at it from a fan’s perspective to understand the way they think. But there are times when I’m like, ‘Wow, they really have no idea that we are actual people. They can’t separate us from our characters.’ You don’t have that in other professions.”
All valid points, but this is still him speaking from a position of privilege, and it’d be super nice if he realized that before he went on with the unfortunate comparisons.
We’re still in a pandemic. A lot of people are struggling. First world problems are still problems, we realize, but in this day and age ….well, they feel tinier and tinier than ever.
