Warning: There are spoilers for the film Monday ahead!
Any long-time fan of Sebastian Stan’s career will be well aware of how long the journey to Monday has been. Funnily enough, this journey is ironically fitting with the film’s structure. We were impatiently awaiting news about Monday‘s distribution just as long as those involved with the making of the film.
A quick glimpse at Stan’s Instagram page will show posts chronicling updates with hopeful messages about an eventual release. His most recent post about the movie is a love letter to his experience making the film and what he hopes people take away from it because it’s finally out!
Monday is a movie with electric chemistry from its two leads — Sebastian Stan and Denise Gough. The setting of Greece heightens the story and the visual beauty of the film. Even when Stan’s Mickey Henry and Gough’s Chloe Gains become a little too real for comfort, it’s impossible to look away from the screen because of the fantastic performances and location.
That’s the magic of Monday. The hard work from everyone involved is palpable through its almost surreal realism. Argyris Padaimitropoulos’ direction brings us, as viewers, so close to Mickey and Chloe that we feel like we’re a part of this fast-paced romance.
It’s always special when a piece of art can make the viewer feel like a participant, and Monday succeeds at that.
As someone who loves romantic comedies to my very core, I thoroughly enjoyed this dramatic look at what comes after the happily ever after. In Chloe and Mickey’s case, this translates to what comes after the romantic declaration at the airport. Life is long and messy and complicated, and love is not void of those sentiments either.
