Legends of Tomorrow 6×02 “Meat: The Legends” has all the ingredients that, like a good burger, leave you satisfied but wanting to come back for more. A spoonful of silliness, a dash of alien mischief and heaping dose of team bonding. “Meat: The Legends” may not be healthy for you, but much like the big bang burgers that Behrad slings on the grill, there’s no way but get addicted to Legends of Tomorrow.
“Meat: The Legends” is basically a version of “The Blob,” if hungry customers ate the blob instead. However, the heart of the episode deals with the team learning how to deal with each other now that their leader is gone for the time being. Because we refuse to think that Sara Lance won’t be back on the Waverider sooner than later.
So let’s go through the different groupings in “Meat: The Legends” and how they resolve their problems with one another. And what better way to start than with the newest team member and a hurting interim leader.
SPOONER AND AVA
Oil and Water. Cats and Dogs. Cincinnati Bengals and the Super Bowl. Those are just a few things that don’t mix well together. Spooner and Ava spend most of “Meat: The Legends” in much the same way.
Ava has only one goal in mind : FIND SARA. No matter what. Crazy Stepford wife using alien ooze to make her husband’s burgers popular? Take her out so they can find a way to have the alien lead them to Sara. So it makes sense that she pushes Spooner harder than she should in finding the alien. Ava is hurting and that kind of hurt is rare.
Except Spooner also is feeling that pain every single day. After saving Ava and the remaining staff of Big Bang Burger from the alien, she tells them the real reason she hates aliens so much: When she was younger, her mom was also abducted by the aliens but never returned. Spooner’s not in any mood to follow rules. She’s just hungry for one thing : Revenge.
So it would make sense for these two to fight, but there’s also grow a growing acceptance with one another. Does it mean that their styles won’t clash again? Oh hell, no. But Spooner has found somewhere she belongs now after all this time in a world that she didn’t feel like she did. If anyone can help Spooner overcome the pain of what happened to her, it will be the Legends. Especially Ava, who knows about not feeling like you belong before meeting the Legends.
BEHRAD AND ZARI
First things first —Legends of Tomorrow has thrown so many silly things at us that there’s nothing that would surprise us. Beebo? Okay. Sisqo in a museum? No problem. But there is one thing that is so wild and unbelievable that it has to be mentioned: No one loves working the grill of a fast-food place Behrad. No amount of herbal delights will change that.
Behrad and Zari’s dilemma in “Meat: The Legends” is one that almost every brother and sister has had at one point of time while growing up together. Someone has something that the other one wants them to share. In this case, the totem is that special toy that Behrad has and doesn’t want to share with Zari.
Now it’s not our place to pick sides but let’s pick a side. We’re on Zari’s here. Yes, the totem does have a bond with Behrad but would that bond really have been broken by sharing the totem with Zari? No, in fact not only would have stayed the same but his bond with Zari would be stronger. Understanding the things that happen while controlling that power could have connected them in ways that they’ve not quite yet done. Notwithstanding though, both end up with a piece of the totem thanks to a little help from a old friend: Zari 1.0.
Seeing Original Zari was a treat and having her split the totem in two leaves a lot of questions for us to have answered in the future. Will we get to see Zari 1.0 again this season? (HOPE SO.) Will having two totems lessen the power of the totem? What will the other team members think of them both having the totem’s powers now? One thing that we have faith in Legends of Tomorrow is that they will give us answers.
SARA AND GARY
“Meat: The Legends” doesn’t give us as much time with Sara and even Gary as hoped, but we do get a continuation of their story. Sara and Gary crash-land on a planet with a adorable pup and a Amelia Earhart that turns out to be a alien creature that wounds Sara. If none of this surprises you in the slightest bit, congrats you’re a life-long Legends of Tomorrow fan!
Sara and Gary’s pairing has a definite odd couple feel to it — seeing a slightly more serious side of Gary has been a nice treat but there’s still the oddball goofiness . Hopefully soon we get to meet the big bad space lord that hired Gary and his ex-fiancee Kayla to capture all the famous figures through time. The big question here is a simple one though: What space lord is going to be able to keep Sara Lance from marrying the love of her life? Thankfully, we already know the answer to this one.
Legends of Tomorrow is always strongest when it shows us the relationships and the bonds that make this team a family. Like most families, there’s fighting and arguing but also plenty of care and love. Between Spooner-Ava and Behrad-Zari, we see the heart of Legends of Tomorrow isn’t the silliness or the adventure. It’s family. The one you’re born in and the one that accepts you.
LEGENDARY THOUGHTS
- “It should lead us back to your girl.” “My fiancé” The smile on Ava’s face when she says that simultaneously fills and breaks our hearts.
- After the owners are eaten by the alien, the lead waitress takes over BBB and re-names it “Big Belly Burger.” So this whole episode was just the original story for Big Belly Burger, wasn’t it?
- Zari’s Dragon Ash is able to save the day and calm down the meat-crazed customers at BBB. So next time don’t be so hesitant to try some new-wave product.. It could save you from zombie-like people.
- Needed more appearances in “Meat: The Legends” from the dog. Always need more appearances on tv shows by dogs.
- Would love a full episode of John and Ava being forced to do southern accents.
