To find a nice word, let’s say the Younger finale has been divisive. Fans aren’t exactly pleased with the way the show handled the romantic storylines in the final season, and the realities of COVID made is so that some characters that felt integral to the story could not return for the final season. So, all in all, not everyone’s happy with what went down. And that’s being charitable.
Sutton Foster, who played main character Liza, isn’t among those people. She’s very, very happy with how the series ended.
“I honestly had no idea how the series was going to end, but when I read the finale, I thought, ‘How could it have ended any other way?’” Foster told TVLine, particularly referencing Liza’s big promotion. “I thought Darren Star nailed it. And I thought the finale stayed true to what the entire show was about.”
She also addressed Josh and Liza’s kind of interaction, but she didn’t seem to want to commit too much one way or another, leaving it up to the audience. Though even she had to admit it reads like a hint at a potential rekindling of their relationship.
And honestly, that’s part of what fans have a problem with. Charliza fans feel like they got an entire season of being jerked around only to get nothing in the way of endgame, and on the other hands, fans of Josh and Liza feel like, if they were going to be endgame, they should have gotten more screentime.
Honestly, I agree with both. Not my favorite ending, by far. But hey, we’re glad Sutton Foster is happy with it. Opinions are just that, opinions.
