Roswell, New Mexico 3×09 “Tones of Home” took us on a twisty mind-bending journey with Alex, brought us on an Echo road trip, and gave us that Gregory Manes/Maria Deluca moment we have been asking for. And as per usual, we were given some more major revelations.
Let’s get into our review.
In episode 3×09 “Tones of Home” Max has been rescued from the stasis pod which puts Liz and everyone else back on yet another mission to save his life. Technically, his heart has already been saved but, the new mission is to try and sever the tie that Jones has on Max without, well… killing Max. That leads Liz and Max on a road trip to Los Angeles where her former hookup Heath is.
Liz thinks Heath can help her because he’s just as good as she is with all the science stuff. Not only that, but he also knew about all her secret side projects she was working on. One of which included a jar full of spores that could be turned into stem cells. Obviously, this is a hard pill for Max to swallow because he knows that Liz had something with Heath. We can’t think of a more awkward situation than taking your ex-boyfriend on a road trip with you to get in touch with your… well, we’re not really sure what Heath is to Liz.
Despite the reason for Liz and Max’s road trip to LA, we still got major Echo feels. Watching them reminisce about their past road trips and what life was like in their younger days was really cute. It was just a soft moment where they both were able to forget about all the things that tore them apart. Naturally, that moment was short lived when jealousy seemed to rear its ugly head. Max can’t get over the fact that Liz could move on with someone else and we totally get that.
We also understand where Liz was coming from because she had to move on with her life at some point. What we couldn’t understand was how Liz could be so trusting of Heath in telling him everything including where she was hiding her jar of spores. Max knew something was questionable about Heath and all the signs were there. Liz was just so blinded by her relationship with Heath that she couldn’t believe he would ever betray her.
When you think about it, it’s really messed up that Liz was more trusting of a guy she met two seconds ago versus one she had basically known most of her life. On the other hand, we also feel bad for Liz because she basically had two of the men in her life screw with her hard work. Max blew up her lab, and Heath stole her spores. I will say this, at least Max had the decency to save her tape recordings before he blew up the lab so she wouldn’t lose everything.
What’s interesting about Roswell, New Mexico is that every episode starts off with the entire group on their own journeys and they ultimately converge at the end. While Max and Liz were on their road trip to LA, Maria, Isobel, and Gregory Manes were investigating a Christian camp to hunt for a missing alien. Ultimately, we find out that Father Dallas who we met in Roswell, New Mexico 3×07 “Goodnight Elizabeth” is an alien and Heath is his best friend. That explains why Heath stole Liz’s spores.
Turns out, Heath stole Liz’s spores to save Dallas. Seems he and Liz have a little more in common than just their love of science. They are both on a mission to save the ones they care about, and we are very curious to know just what is going on with Dallas.
Isobel spends most of the episode working on bringing Jones down. She hasn’t really stopped to allow herself any joy or to even find love. We were glad to see Maria remind her that it’s important for her to step out of survival mode for a minute and allow herself to have something she wants for herself. If that something turns out to be the cute investigative reporter Anatsa, we’re here for it.
Elsewhere, we finally got fed with some Kyle moments. Yup, he is out of that coma finally. I guess the writers didn’t feel the need to give us the wakey wakey moment because we just got thrown into him getting a medical exam and then he’s back out on the road with Uncle Eduardo. Kyle learns a little bit about his dad and what kind of involvement he had with Deep Sky. He basically doesn’t have time to hear what his uncle is saying and he’s clearly ready to be back out there helping his friends.
Our fourth storyline surrounds Alex trying to solve the mysteries the Lockhart Machine holds. The problem is, as we previously learned, the Lockhart Machine drives people who work with it mad. We saw the result of what the Lockhart Machine does when it turned Trevor Gunther the boot maker insane. In this episode of Roswell, New Mexico we witness it happen as Alex begins to hallucinate.
Michael had already told Alex in a phone call earlier that he was concerned about what the machine could do to him. Alex being Alex, lied. He promised Michael he was only looking at the machine for 15 minutes every six hours but that was not the case. Alex just cannot let things go and when it comes to Michael, he will risk it all. After finding a Project Shepherd piece inside the Lockhart Machine, he worked to figure out how to remove it.
This work, led to him hacking into Deep Sky’s security camera to steal the Lockhart Machine which he had been exposed to for TWO DAYS! Those two days took a toll on him because he started hallucinating Michaels mom Nora. The hallucinations nearly killed him, but Michael once again had perfect timing. The moment he saved Alex was reminiscent of him catching Maria in episode 3×02 “Give Me One Reason” as she jumped off the roof of the Crash down. Just like everyone needs a Kyle in their life, everyone also needs a Michael.
After Michael rescues Alex they work together to disassemble the Lockhart Machine. Michael realizes if the Lockhart Machine can communicate with aliens, he can communicate with it. He then uses his power to remove the Project Shepherd piece that was placed inside of it. We can’t help thinking all the hallucinations Alex was having could have been avoided if he had let Michael help him from the beginning.
We couldn’t end this review without mentioning what our buddy Jones has been up to. I mean, you already know it’s no good because he’s always up to no good. He spent the entirety of the episode trying to find a scientist with Liz level expertise because he’s still looking to sever himself from Max. His search leads him to Heath who he locates at the end of the episode. We don’t know if Jones plans on killing Heath or just holding him hostage while gets him to do his bidding. We’re getting closer and closer to the end of season three so only time will tell what’s going to happen next.
Other Thoughts
- Heath is more than a booty call huh Liz? Well, enlighten us please because we need to know if he means more to you than Max girl!
- For someone who just woke up from a coma, Kyle sure looked fantastic!
- Maria playing matchmaker for Isobel and Anatsa, yup, we’re here for it.
- Maria and Gregory’s drink puns, we died. Also, why are these two so freaking cute?
- Max saved Liz’s tapes before he blew up her lab. On the one hand, we are like, he does care. On the other, we’re like “DUDE, YOU BLEW UP HER LAB WITH HER SAMPLES!” even having the tape recordings, she still has to start everything all over again.
- Michael’s “Eduardo Valenti I come in peace” shirt.
- Gregory and Maria hooking up, FINALLY!
- “Speaking of the most important meal of the day, how do you take your Gregory Manes?” – Isobel to Maria the morning after.
- Very curious to know just how much Heath knew about Liz prior to them meeting. It seems too convenient he would just steal all of her stuff and know exactly what to do with it.
- Can Malex get a real first date please?
