We’re almost there! Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark” sets the stage for a spectacular and chilling season finale as Charles continues to seek allies for his war with Jakub and Rebecca faces the truth about her father. Time for review!
Here we go!
Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark” moves us to tears as Charles is saying goodbye to his children in the face of the uncertain future. Tate… he feels so guilty for giving the book to Loa. He feels responsible for all the violence and deaths that it caused and fears that his father will hate him for it. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Charles is proud of him because he did what he thought was right, the best he knew and followed his heart because he’s a good kid and he will become an even better man. There is nothing he can do to make Charles hate him. And we neither confirmed nor denied that some tears escaped at this time.
But when we ended up crying inconsolably, it was at the farewell between Honor and Charles. He asks her to stay in the church and she defends her value, she defends herself tooth and nail and if he already admired her, now I admire her even more. But precisely because of that courage that she has, that brave, is that Charles wants her to stay right where she is, protecting others.

Charles not only trusts her to protect herself and her family, but to protect everyone else because he knows that they are safe with her and I could kiss him for not being a misogynistic jerk like the men of his time. Charles is proud of her, of the great woman she is becoming, and he knows that she will take care of everyone no matter what.
Charles would say so many things to her…so many things that his words get stuck and he doesn’t even know where to start. But Honor doesn’t need him to say anything, it’s all said because she sees everything she needs to see in Charles’s eyes. And this scene is beautiful.
I found beautiful too the way Rebecca wants to get closer when she sees Tate, Honor and Charles fused in an embrace. Her feet start to move before she knows it. They are her family and she wants to join that family hug, she feels that this is her place. But she stops. She doesn’t know if she has the right to do it, to be part of that moment or even to be a witness to it, suddenly, she feels like a peeping tom, like an intruder.
She loves those three with her life and they are her family, she feels them that way but the reality is that she must win the trust of Tate and Honor again and she must also clarify her situation with Charles because they have not talked about anything at all. What if she approaches and one of them rejects her? She could not bear it, so she prefers to stay in her place and be a mere spectator of that hug.
Speaking of Rebecca, she’s determined to get her father back in Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark.” She looked into his eyes and he recognized her, she is sure, he is alive and just…she just needs to rescue him from Jakub’s clutches. She had to accept the death of her father at a very young age and to know that he’s alive, that he’s so close…it makes her hope to get him back, to get back the relationship they had, to get him back and start from there.
When Rebecca tells Charles she hopes he understands her, after all, he’s in the same situation with Loa and is determined to bring her back. She thinks that he will support her and that they can fight together to bring their loved ones back. But Charles does the opposite.

Precisely because of what is happening with Loa, he knows that Rebecca is making a mistake, she’s being guided by hope, by the illusion of recovering her father, just as it happened to him with his daughter, but in the previous episode Charles was realizing that getting Loa back was impossible…and Rebecca will inevitably come to the same conclusion about her father, which will break her soul.
But he can’t tell her that. He can’t be the one who breaks her in two…so he prefers to get away from her, although he knows that it hurts her that he does it, because he doesn’t have the heart to hurt her. He doesn’t have the heart to be the cause of her suffering.
On the other hand, I have been curious about the reaction of Rebecca’s mother when she tells her the whole truth, it is as if she already knew that Rebecca’s father was alive and is a vampire, she deceived Rebecca about her father all these years?
It’s good that Charles decided to count on the rest of the town to defeat Jakub and his army in Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark.” They needed help. But I also understand George’s doubts, he loves his wife and knows that as soon as they see what she became, everyone is going to try to hurt her and there will be too many for him to avoid it.
He doesn’t want to lose her. Just…he doesn’t realize that he already did. His wife is not the same person that he knew and loved and they need the rest of the town to see her to believe what is happening, so he takes a risk… and it doesn’t turn out well. In the end, George must see how her wife dies in front of his eyes and we really feel sorry for him, neither of them deserved this, she had no choice in what happened and he always wanted to protect her, give her back to herself.
But this is not the only death in Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark.” The minister is now dead and I hope they catch the culprit and don’t believe that it was someone from Jakub’s army. He deserves justice.

In Chapelwaite 1×09 “The Gathering Dark” is the first time I feel that Loa is herself since she was reborn transformed into a vampire. The way she has insisted to Jakub about the book…she doesn’t want to hurt anyone and less to her family and she really thought she was doing the right thing by joining Jakub. I think Loa realizes that Jakub has other plans very different from what she thought. What will Loa do?
But there is another question that worries me more, who did her so much harm? Perhaps it’s a mixture of everything, the sudden death of her mother, the move to another town where no one accepted her and she did not fit in, the betrayal of Rebecca (the only person she felt she could trust)…It’s inevitable that it has not affected and hardened her heart, that it has not made her want revenge.
Or maybe it’s that she blames Charles for the death of her mother…I can’t wait to know why Loa is in so much pain because I think that is going to be the key for her to be completely herself again.
