I Know What You Did Last Summer 1×07 “If Only Dogs Could Talk” legit took some turns we’re not really ok with and that made us realize this show might be a little blander than we thought. A lot of it could be because of the disrespect handed down to Courtney and Riley in “Least You Had a Spare.” We’re still not over that thong scene and it’s just highlighted how much this show uses female bodies without giving them actual substance. Just how they use each other in general, if we’re being honest.
Dylan, who we’ve never really cared about, did not consent to have sex with Alison. She deceived him just like Lennon did and we’re disgusted by both of them. No matter how they try to frame it, neither of them is the hero of this story. Lennon used the pain inside of her and her general dissatisfaction with life to destroy herself and take her sister down with her while playing with those like Dylan. And Alison, who we had some hope that she would find herself in this show just ended up becoming Lennon.
It’s a disappointing turn of events that makes us look back at I Know What You Did Last Summer as a whole and realize that this whole show hasn’t been about growth or self-discovery. It’s been about lies. And it sucks because it could’ve been both. Some of the greatest shows out there are full of lies, secrets, and how people grow from them. Not this show. I Know What You Did Last Summer is about murder (which we knew coming in) and confusing the heck out of us about who the bad guy is with no payout in return.
Seriously, by now we should’ve had some idea who the killer is. But nope. Blank slate. Every “lead” has been a fake-out and the cult storyline has been blander than unsalted chicken. This show should’ve run with Dylan being the bad guy or somehow involved. Or he could’ve been committed to Alison instead of going “I was into both of you” after spending episode after episode mourning Alison, who was pretending to be Lennon, and being all emo in a cave because of it all.
And another thing, narrative-wise, how does showing the dad and the sheriff aggressively having sex add to the plot of I Know What You Did Last Summer? Yes, we understand that adults have sex. It’s reproduction after all. But purpose would be nice. Instead, we just got a long scene of an elected official having OBVIOUS sex in a place where children were. Like…that’s so gross and just pigeonholes this character into the sexy POC character who is a tired stereotype.
Basically, we’re over this show and have no idea how we started watching or how the final episode is going to make us watch a season 2 if it ever happens.
