Legends of Tomorrow 7×06 “Deus Ex Latrina” highlights two things that are a Legends trademark by now: emotional character-driven moments and unique pairings that come way out of the left field. The former lets us get to know a little more about the latest person to join the Legends while the latter leaves us with positives and many negatives. So let’s dive in with more insight into one Dr. Gwyn Davies…
REMEMBRENCE
After a failed attempt with Davies’ time machine, the Legends land in 1986 Chernobyl on the day of the nuclear meltdown there. That leads to different pairing using different methods to solve the latest problem but we’ll focus on the most important one of “Deus Ex Latrina” –Davies and Zari.
“Deus Ex Latrina” gives us more insight into Gwyn Davies as he opens up to Zari. We find out that the key catalyst for Davies building his time machine is for the noblest and sometimes the most heartbreaking of reasons of all: love. Seems that in World War I, Gwyn was very close to a fellow soldier named Alun. Gwyn and Alun went on a mission that went terribly wrong that led to the death of Alun.
Adding this backstory to Gwyn is a great way to let us learn more about him and grow a bond with him. One of the keys to Legends of Tomorrow‘s success is rooting for these characters to succeed. Rooting for Sara and Ava to be kickass leaders in love, rooting for Zari and Nate to find happiness together, and rooting for Gideon to learn how to be human.
Also, A+ performance by Matt Ryan when Gwyn finally opens up to Zari and tells her about the man he fell in love with. Now we can root for Gwyn to heal from the pain he is in so he can succeed in rescuing the person he cares for the most.
STRESS RELIEF
Even the strongest couples need a little time apart and “Deus Ex Latrina” lets Sara and Ava have their own girls’ night out away from each other: Ava with Astra and Sara with Spooner.
A key staple of Legends of Tomorrow is always having multiple pairings during an episode and “Deus Ex Latrina” gives us some new ones we haven’t gotten a lot of. Seeing the ways that Ava and Sara relieve stress with their friends by their side was also a good insight into each character.
Ava chopping trees and completing tasks while venting to Astra was funny. As was Sara going squirrel hunting with Spooner in the woods. Both showcase the quirks that make each woman unique and why Avalance are perfectly made for each other. After these little side missions, Ava and Sara reunite happy to see each other and the family has both their moms back on the same page.
Love to see it.
FILLING IN THE BLANKS
“Deus Ex Latrina” also answers so many questions about this season of Legends. Who destroyed the Waverider? Why is there another Waverider? Who’s creating these robots of Hoover and Edison?? The answer of course is our least favorite pal Bishop and his slowly out of control Evil Gideon.
How evil is Evil Gideon? When Bishop’s assistant Ava clone starts to try to change things, Gideon flushes her out of the ship and to her death. Sorry, but once you kill an Ava clone in general, that’s a line you just don’t cross.
Realizing this, Bishop escapes the Waverider by escaping through the bathroom. He lands on top of the time machine just as the Legends get it working. Bishop slowly realizing that his creation is out of his control is serious Frankenstein vibes. Only this time the monster is extremely intelligent and has one single goal in mind: Stop the Legends.
LEGENDARY THOUGHTS
- Nate and Zari don’t have a lot of time together this episode but we get a key point in their relationship: Nate decides he wants to move into the totem with Zari. Will this end well? Who knows but It’ll be interesting to see what happens.
- Gary and Gideon hook up together. Sorry but no. No thank you. No.
- “The Captains look happy together and we get squirrel for dinner. Win-Win.”
- “Yes I loved Alun….and I failed him.” Oh man poor Gwyn.
- Completely sure that Sara is going to love seeing Bishop again.
- Of course the Legends arrive in Chenyobyl exactly when there was a nuclear meltdown. Couldn’t show up on a random January 12th could they?
- Gary trying to be Nate’s best buddy is making us upset. That is Ray Palmer or Behrad Tarazi. NOT YOU.
- Wonder how squirrel does taste?
Legends of Tomorrow airs on the CW on Wednesday Nights at 8 pm.
