At long last (okay, it hasn’t actually been that long, but it’s felt like it), the Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas trailer is here! Until we saw it, we didn’t realize it was even possible to laugh, cry, cheer, and get overwhelmed by feelings over the span of a one minute and forty-eight second trailer. But it is.
All We Want for Christmas
The Roku Channel describes Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas as follows:
The film picks up where season two of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist left off, continuing Zoey’s journey as she navigates work, family, love, and everything in between. Golden Globe® nominated Jane Levy, Skylar Astin, Alex Newell, John Clarence Stewart, Andrew Leeds, Alice Lee, Michael Thomas Grant, Kapil Talwalkar, Mary Steenburgen, Peter Gallagher, and Bernadette Peters (nominated for an Emmy® for her performance in the series), will all reprise their roles, bringing the same love and passion to the full-length feature film that loyal fans have come to know from the television show.
As fans of the series know, season two ended with Zoey finally deciding it was time to embrace the future, as well as the joy and possible loss that comes from allowing herself to love. Which isn’t to say that she was done grieving from the father she’d lost to progressive supranuclear palsey, a rare degenerative condition. And this – and so much more – is very apparent from our glimpse at what the movie has in store.
Home for the Holidays
I want us all to be together and have the most Mitch Christmas ever!
Zoey, deciding that breathing is overrated.
In the trailer, it is clear that this will be the Clarke family’s first official Christmas without Mitch. How do they celebrate this pivotal familial holiday without the beloved patriarch to oversee the festivities? Their first inclination seems to be…they don’t. Zoey might have decided to stop trying to run from the pain, but the other members of her family might not be ready to follow suit, as they’re planning to leave town instead. Consciously or not, it seems they intend to deal with their grief at not having Mitch around over the holidays by running from it.
But in true Christmas Movie™ fashion, Zoey decides that the best way to honor her father is to embrace everything that he loved about the season. She decides to throw the Mitchiest Christmas (Mitchmas?) ever!
What could possibly go wrong?
Are we celebrating the holidays or robbing a casino?
Mo, being the voice of reason. Again.
Yes. Of course Zoey would tackle Christmas decorations with enough determination and attention to detail that members of the CIA would tell her to take it down a notch. Not to mention apparently enough sugar to take flight.
Happily, she’s not alone. She has help in the form of Max’s unwavering support (making our Clarkeman hearts giddy). And, of course, she’s able to get the rest of the Clarke family on board. David and Max decorating the house together? Yes, please! After the hilarious “morning after” breakfast scene last season, we’ve been wanting to see more of these two together. (Also, can they come decorate my house? Because I’ve always wanted to go all out in decorations for the holidays, ala Mitch, but it just seems like a lot of work.)
Zoey’s as excited about the holiday as a kid on…well, Christmas. But even with the best planning, things don’t always go exactly as expected. As one can imagine from the shots of a harried Zoey trying to cook all the food ever made (or so it seems). And threatening her loved ones with an electric knife. Do not mess with a tiny redhead wielding an electric knife.
One thing’s for sure. Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas is going to bring fans all the emotions that the series did. There will be tears, laughter, and probably more than a touch of second-hand embarrassment. We can’t wait.
In Love On Christmas
Tonight is going to be…great.
Max, being the best supportive boyfriend.
You didn’t think we’d talk about the trailer and not talk about Clarkeman, did you? Not a chance. What’s a Christmas movie without romance?
The second season of the series was a tumultuous one for Clarkeman fans, as Zoey and Max came together, broke up, and came together again. So if the trailer is any indication, shippers will need to brace themselves to be overwhelmed with all the warm and fuzzy feelings in store for our favorite couple. Zoey and Max snuggled up in bed together? Christmas tree shopping? Dancing together near the bench where they ended last season? Max showing Zoey unequivocal support in her determination to create the perfect Mitch Christmas?
It’s like all our Christmas wishes are coming true!
The Music In…Them
Yeah. Christmas this year is going to be rough as-
Zoey, wishing her powers would give her a break, already.
It wouldn’t be Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist if it wasn’t filled with heart songs. And while we don’t know (most of) the musical numbers, we get glimpses of a few of them in the trailer. Naturally, there’s a clip of “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” – released earlier this month in a first look at the upcoming movie. Zoey looks more than a little stressed during “We Need a Little Christmas.” We don’t know what’s going on with all the coders in their Christmas sweaters. But a Zoey/Max duet? Yes, please and thank you!
The biggest cliffhanger in the second season was, of course, the revelation that Max now shares Zoey’s powers. And since he’s watching her sing at least one heart song in the trailer, this development will clearly have a role to play in the movie. How much of one and how these shared powers will deepen his relationship with Zoey is still unclear. But it seems from the trailer that Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist fans will get almost everything they could have wanted. And that makes for a very happy holiday, indeed.
Here’s a look at Alex Newell (and a mall full of others) singing “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”:
