It’s strange to think that the end of A Discovery Witches is here. Nevertheless, the words have to be written and the stage has been set for an epic ending. It doesn’t mean that the adventures that we’ve gone on these past couple of seasons just disappear. They stay with us long after the screen goes black on Diana (Teresa Palmer), Matthew (Matthew Goode), and the rest of the gang. Because this is just as much our story as it is for the witches, vampires, and daemons of this world.
With season 3 right around the corner, and you here to read this advanced review of A Discovery of Witches, we thought it would be a good idea to tease what’s to come. But no worries, there will be zero spoilers. We’re not that type of place and we’ll never be. So…general things. Season 3 absolutely builds up on everything we’ve seen so far and raises the bar on the danger, drama, and complicated bits we’ve learned over the years.
For Diana, she’s just returning to the present after Knox’s brutal attack on her aunt Emily. That acts as a catalyst, as you’d expect, for the rest of the season. But Diana doesn’t let this stop her. It drives her while keeping her grounded because she knows the risks of what she’s doing. This seasons Diana is also sure of herself in a way that we’ve never seen before; handling her power with grace and leaning on her family without hesitation.
Matthew is on the same track as Diana. The only difference is that he’s got his past nipping at his heels. This makes for a Matthew that is on edge and trying to solve the problems coming his way in a very him way without neglecting or destroying his growth. And it doesn’t create the problems you’d expect in his relationship with Diana. Instead, you see them leaning into each other and strengthening their bond, and supporting those around her.
Together, Diana and Matthew continue to prove that they are the kind of couple that we need a fourth, fifth, and sixth season all about. They make us feel like we’re watching a partnership instead of two people taking on the world. And their relationship continues to transcend tropes and problems we’ve come to know and hate in the media we consume. That leaves for a viewer who wants more and is excited to explore the work on Deborah Harkness.
Ultimately, season 3 of A Discovery of Witches is the result of the impeccable world-building of a team of writers, actors, and more who wanted to tell a different story. And in joining this project they gave us a world to immerse ourselves full of witches, vampires, and daemons that we can’t stop thinking about as season 3 of this epic series wraps up. So join in, get ready, and return to the world of A Discovery of Witches. You won’t regret it. We didn’t.
