The sequel to I Am Legend seems to actually be happening and we’re kind of excited. Will Smith, who was in the 2007 movie that started this particular journey, is set to return for what could easily be assumed as the role of Robert Neville. And joining him this time around is Michael B. Jordan. Best known for Creed and Black Panther, he’s a welcome addition to a highly anticipated movie.
While no director is attached to the project yet, there is one essential detail that has been ironed out: who will write the sequel to I Am Legend. Akiva Goldsman, who won an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for A Beautiful Mind, will be set to return to write this new adventure. Not only that, he’s set to produce the movie.
Based on the 1954 novel by Richard Matheson, it tells the story of a post-apocalyptic New York City crawling in zombies. Smith’s character is seemingly the only survivor in the city. Well, that and his dog Sam. Together they navigate this dangerous new world while Smith’s character tries to find a cure for the infection that has overtaken humans. What he finds is unexpected in so many ways.
It opened to $77.2M and went on to gross $585.4M worldwide according to Deadline. It also starred Alice Braga before she was the Queen of the South. It also had a young Willow Smith playing Marley Neville, who is now kicking ass by making music, and Charlie Tahan from Ozark. And honestly, if this cast announcement is any indication, this movie is off to a great start.
