This week’s episode of 9-1-1: Lone Star was all over the place. In “The Bird,” a women runs over her husband accidentally, an older “cat lady” destroys a pet store (not an accident), and Owen receives an unusual gift from Gwyn. And he’s less than enthused. Let’s review.
Surprise Homecoming
This episode started off with a very dramatic story. We see a woman driving to her daughter’s baptism, and she’s talking to her husband who she thinks is overseas with the military. A few minutes later her husband reveals that he is actually waiting for her at the church. His surprise made her so excited that she stopped paying attention to where she was going and accidentally ran over her husband.
This is why you shouldn’t face time someone while driving. We knew something bad was going to happen. It always does when someone on TV isn’t looking at the road. If the husband had just waited another minute or two, then they could avoided this whole situation. But anyway, it was a nice idea. Luckily the 126 manage to save his life and now he can get to know his daughter. After his leg heals, of course.
The Bird…. And Other Pets
After returning to the firehouse, Owen learns Gwyn left him her bird, Ginsberg. This bird didn’t try to hide how he left about Owen and kept calling him “Buttface.” We thought this was hilarious. But Ginsberg was beautiful and was actually so sweet and loved everyone else. He even bonded with Mateo and ate food out of his hand.
Owen finally figured out that the bird overheard him and Gwyn fighting when they were married, and that was why he was hostile. Owen made up with Ginsberg, and we were very sad to find Ginsberg dead at the end of the episode. Pets love their owners and can feel sadness just like we do so maybe his grief was just too much to handle. But we’re disappointed we don’t get to have Ginsberg longer. He was fun.
Apparently, pets were a theme this week as there was another weird pet story later in the episode. This one involved an older lady getting very upset because she wasn’t getting fast enough service at a pet store. Listen, we get that the worker spent too much time hitting on the other customer, but her reaction was a little much. She starts throwing things and then all the shelves collapse trapping both a customer and her dog.
Tommy quickly realizes something isn’t right about the elderly lady. It turns out she has toxoplasmosis from her 16 cats, or “angels,” as she calls them. That’s why she had so much rage and went completely off the deep end. So, at least, she had a medical condition and just wasn’t a horrible person.
We liked seeing TK and Tommy working together in “The Bird.” We’re glad she convinced him to go to a grief counseling meeting together. Not only is Tommy an amazing boss, but she’s a good friend, too.
Paul’s Health Issues
The other main focus this week was Paul and his health issues. He’s been having nightmares, and Marjan convinces him checked out just to be safe. It turns out he has a heart condition, and it’s pretty serious. His dad died of a heart attack when he was 36, and the same thing can happen Paul.
There’s a surgery he can have, but Paul is against it. If he has a pacemaker put in, he thinks he can’t be a firefighter anymore. Marjan isn’t happy with his decision. Later in the episode, Paul collapses and Marjan calls 9-1-1. When Paul wakes up in the hospital, he’s furious to find out that the doctor’s put in a pacemaker and Marjan didn’t stop them.
Paul and Marjan’s friendship can’t be over, right? We understand why Paul’s upset but Marjan his one of is best friends. She was just worried about him and didn’t want him to die. Plus, she’s right about the doctors not exactly consulting her before they did the procedure to save his life. We’re looking forward to seeing how the writers fix this mess. And we would appreciate them doing it in a timely manner.
9-1-1: Lone Star airs Mondays at 8/7c on Fox.
