The 25th anniversary has brought up a lot of mixed feelings for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But there’s one thing that most fans can agree on: the importance of Willow Rosenberg and Tara Maclay’s relationship. Because, times have changed since Willow and Tara got together.
Representation has blossomed, people feel seen for the first time in their lives, and every day opens doors for those in the LGBTQ community. And for many, especially those who grew up watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and were closeted, this relationship was game-changing.
For many, it was the first LGBTQ kiss they’d ever seen on TV. In 2022, despite the troubles we are facing with many trying to kill our right to love who we want to love, this almost seems impossible. We have Wynonna Earp, Love, Victor, and The Owl House.
But there had to be that cultural spark that inspired people to get to the place we are now. And for many, that started with Willow and Tara.
Seeing Willow and Tara in turn made viewers, who were LGBTQ, feel like they were accepted and normal; a liberating feeling that this writer feels to this very day. Because if we learn from the media we consume then Buffy the Vampire Slayer‘s Willow and Tara told us that it was ok to be us. To be gay. To be lesbian. To be queer and a whole bunch of other orientations that fall under the magic that is LGBTQ+.
And yes, their relationship was troubled and had its ups and downs. But that never took away the importance of Willow and Tara’s love. In fact, it showed us that we could have what our loved ones, friends, and acquaintances had without fear. It was within our reach while being an example to those outside of our communities as to how normal our love truly is.
Ultimately, Willow and Tara are iconic when it comes to LGBTQ representation. They made people feel accepted, normal, and like they could love who they wanted to love. And their legacy and the people they’ve inspired will be something felt for decades to come thanks to Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
