This week’s 9-1-1: Lone Star was all about relationships. In “Riddle of the Sphynx” Owen meets Catherine’s cat and her ex-husband, Tommy goes on her first date since losing Charles, and TK meets a new guy in recovery. Does this sound messy? Yes, it does!
Daddy Issues
Let’s start with Owen. This guy has more issues with women than anyone we’ve ever known. Owen and Catherine seem to be recovering just fine after being stalked. And when Catherine has to leave, Owen volunteers to watch her cat who she shares with her ex-husband, Patrick. Catherine says Patrick is a dead ringer for Owen, and she obviously has a “type”.
The problem is Patrick doesn’t look anything like Owen. He’s bald, and he’s somewhat older than Owen. This bothers Owen, and he tells Catherine that she obviously had a thing for older men and has “daddy issues”. Why in the world would he decide it’s a good idea tell her this?
Well, it turns out that the Patrick that dropped off the cat is Patrick Sr. The father of Catherine’s ex-husband. Catherine’s ex-husband actually does look like Owen. But it’s too late, and we’re pretty sure Catherine and Owen’s relationship is over after the things he said to her.

TK’s Recovery
“Riddle of the Sphynx” also focused on TK’s sobriety. TK basically had to start over in AA thanks to the drugs that Sadie gave him. He’s dedicated to maintaining his sobriety, and he’s made a new friend at his meetings. TK likes Cooper so much that he asked him to be his sponsor. This is great, right? The only problem is Carlos is a little jealous. We don’t blame him at all. We would be too if we found our partner talking to another guy at 3 AM.
Luckily, TK and Carlos had a discussion and talked about their feelings. TK loves Carlos, but he needs someone who understands what being an addict is like. Carlos has never been there (and TK is glad he’s never been there). After meeting Cooper, Carlos becomes more understanding. And it turns out that TK talks about Carlos to Cooper, too. We’re glad that at least TK and Carlos’s relationship seems solid.

Tommy’s First Date
Tommy decides to take the plunge and go out with a guy she met at grief counseling. Going out on her first date since losing Charles took courage and was a huge step forward for her. We’re so proud.
The date ended up being a complete disaster not because of Tommy but because the guy cried before they even had their meal! But that doesn’t matter. Besides, we loved that Tommy confided in Grace in this episode. We love their friendship, and the more scenes the two of them have, the better.
Other Thoughts:
- The car accident near the end of this episode was brutal. We felt for the boy who lost his mom so suddenly. We can’t imagine his pain. And we felt awful for TK. We know that this must have hurt him, too.
- While we love the relationships on this show, we kind of missed having more action. Can we have some more calls next week?
