Closing out our series of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds roundtables is Christina Chong who is playing a new character with legacy Trek roots, La’an Noonien-Singh. For long-time Trek fans, you recognize the name Noonien-Singh…and shudder. If you’re new to Trek or are perhaps testing the waters with Star Trek, you’ll want to take a quick glance at the Memory Alpha page for Khan Noonien Singh. No one wants to mess with Khan, and everyone’s skeptical of someone with that name.
LAAAAAAAAA’AAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!
La’an Noonien-Singh is our chief of security on the Enterprise and acting first officer when Una (Rebecca Romijn) is away. Strong, stoic, resourceful, and serious, La’an is someone you can always count on for a straight answer. I appreciate that quality in her. No spoilers from me, as I’ve had the benefit of screeners, but I think La’an has much more going on beneath the surface than her name suggests. There’s a good bit of mystery to her character that doesn’t have anything to do with her name. I’m excited for the rest of the world to meet her, and I’m excited to learn even more about her character.
Unfortunately, my internet was knocked out due to a power outage during the interview, so I missed my chance to ask Christina Chong a question directly. Fortunately, my fellow interviewers got a lot of great info out of her about La’an. I’ll let Christina do the talking from here on out. Check out her interview, where she’s joined by Melissa Navia and Celia Rose Gooding.
Thank you to Paramount and ViacomCBS for inviting Fangirlish to participate in these interviews! Thanks also to Christina Chong for consenting to the interview and for her thoughtful responses. I’m so excited to watch you add a new character with legacy roots to the Star Trek universe.
Stay tuned to Fangirlish for all your Star Trek news, reviews, and information. We’ll be sharing more roundtable interviews with the rest of the cast of Strange New Worlds soon.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will premiere on May 5, 2022, on Paramount+.
