David Tennant and Catherine Tate, who played the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble respectfully, are returning to Doctor Who and we’ve got some thoughts as to how!
According to the BBC, the pair are currently filming the 60th anniversary. It’s set to air in 2023 with Russell T. Davies as showrunner. There are no official confirmations as to what version they are; is it a parallel universe or an older version of them? And could Donna be Doctor Donna?!
But with the announcement that Ncuti Gatwa is going to be the next Doctor and Yasmin Finnery joining as “Rose,” we can’t wait to talk about our theories, what we’d like to see, and more. So, join us as we dive back into Doctor Who (and hopefully inspire some of you along the way)!
*To make things easier, we’re going to talk about the Doctor by where they fall in the order of things.
1. Ten and Donna bestie hijinks
Ten and Donna were one of the best parts of the Davies era. Their bond was grounded in friendship, hijinks, and a whole lot of mess. And we loved that mess and want to see them bickering, having fun, and pushing each other’s buttons. Also, imagine what all that mess can lead to?
Because we know for a fact that’s going to lead them into trouble that will smack right into Gatwa’s Fourteenth Doctor because these two are explorers and troublemakers. And that’s where the real fun starts because an exasperated Donna at the thought of dealing with two Doctors is going to lead to interactions like you’ve never seen before with Ten and Fourteen loving it.
2. The return of Rose Tyler/Bad Wolf
Rose Tyler was our first companion on Doctor Who and we love her for it. And we’ve always felt like her story was incomplete. You don’t just look into the heart of the Tardis, become a goddess, and then just lead a normal life. And what if…it changed Rose? What if Rose regenerated and became someone different? What if she never left her Doctor? And what if that Rose crosses paths with a version of the Doctor who did lose her?
Look, the angst would be exquisite and we’d love to see any version of the Doctor with his pink and yellow love, especially if Bad Wolf foresaw the 60th anniversary events and brought them together to save the day.
3. Ten and Fourteen bonding
One of our favorite things about Doctor Who is how change is inevitable and part of life. And with that change comes different parts of ourselves, past and present, meeting up. The only thing is that on this show, those parts actually meet up. And personally, we’d love to see Ten and Fourteen bonding.
Sure, Ten will have words about how handsome he looks in the future or something about him getting younger and younger. And yes, Fourteen will probably be like, “Woah, why did I like that style?” But they will bond over crash landing in the same place. Because if it wasn’t Bad Wolf or Donna bringing them together, then it’s simply fate.
4. Doctor Donna and companion John
What if the 60th anniversary flips things around and makes Donna the Doctor and Tennant’s character her trusty companion? And what if Doctor Donna is the one following the lead, feeling like something isn’t right, and it leads her to Fourteen who’s like, “Yeah, something isn’t right. You’re supposed to be human and him the Time Lord. Also, why is Rose here and your companion too?” Sounds a little like a crackfic from AO3 but we’ve seen wilder things happen on Doctor Who and have run with it. Why not this?
Also, we’d just like to see Catherine Tate taking the reins and showing David Tennant’s character what she’d do if she was in charge in the 60th anniversary. And we’d love to see that and possibly, “Are Rose and the Doctor flirting again?! Rassilon, help me.” Eventually she’d play matchmaker too. We feel it in our bones.
