I’ve been anticipating Disenchanted since it was announced. Now, the first trailer has arrived!
In 2007, Disney released Enchanted, a successful modern updating of its tried-and-true fairytale formula. Amy Adams starred as Giselle, a girl from the animated land of Andalasia who is about to marry Prince Edward (James Marsden) when his evil stepmother sends her to our world. She meets lawyer Robert, played by Patrick Dempsey. And real love makes itself known.
Now, Disenchanted continues their story. Giselle and Robert have had 15 years of a happy marriage and another child to go with Robert’s daughter Morgan. They move to a new small town and encounter so many problems that Giselle wishes for their lives to be a perfect fairytale.
You KNOW that backfires. This trailer shows us a bit about how.
Though Malvina Monroe, played by Maya Rudolph, is the villain, the trailer also hints at the way Giselle’s position as stepmother to Morgan might cause her wish to have some consequences on her personality. Giselle was always the epitome of the innocent heroine. To see her go even a little bad is unexpected but thrilling. Adams’ performance seems excellent. She even deepens her voice a bit when the naughtiness overtakes her. There is also the added delight of seeing characters like Prince Edward, his love Nancy, and the chipmunk Pip back from the original film.
I have no doubt that Giselle, possibly helped by Robert and others, will turn back to the good side and save the day. Just as she did in the first film. But how? Well, we’ll have to wait for Thanksgiving to find out!
Until then, check out the first trailer for Disenchanted here:
