If there’s one thing that Agent Twilight can’t control, it’s his daughter’s grades. Spy x Family 1×18 showed just how important Anya’s grades are for world peace. This week, Anya had her midterms coming up and of course, like everything else in this anime, nothing is ever easy. Fortunately, she’s got the help of her uncle and her father to ensure she gets the best grades ever. Except, if she doesn’t pass, she will recieve Tonitrus Bolts.
Let’s just say compared to last week’s episode, “Uncle the Private Tutor/Daybreak” was more enjoyable and hilarious. Maybe even funnier than other Spy x Family episodes.
OPERATION STRIX AT RISK

Anya’s midterms could jeopardize all the hard work that Twilight put into Operation Strix. All he needs is for her to become an Imperial Scholar, and Twilight can meet the diplomat he’s meant to get close to. So, Spy x Family 1×18 is all about trying to get Anya’s grades up. Anya thinks she can cheat by reading someone else’s mind. But, little did we know, she has a weakness. When there is a lunar eclipse, Anaya loses the ability to read anyone’s mind. Which I have a feeling will come back to jeopardize more later on in this anime, but for now she knows she has to study or everything will fail.
Loid can never get through to Anya because he spends more time thinking too loud in order for her study properly. Perhaps she can only study during a lunar eclipse. But Yor knows she can depend on her brother for help. Yuri did offer after all, which is what lead to my confusion about the second half of this story.
GREAT GRADES = CONQUERING THE WORLD

Yuri told Yor he would be glad to help tutor Anya if need be. So, naturally they call him up so he can help Anya get her grades up. So, why is it that he looks down on Anya as Loid’s daughter? She’s Yor’s daughter, too. Well, Yuri is still one of the worst parts of this anime. How is it that his sister complex is still the butt of the joke? Literally, his whole personality is about Yor. She’s amazing and all, but boy, get another trait, please. The only good portion of this half was watching how he inspires Anya.
Yuri studied everything he could so he could make sure that his sister had a stable life. Yor would never be lacking so long as she had Yuri. Spy x Family 1×18 took it even further to show just how devoted he can be. He encourages Anya to study so she can be inspired to do better for Yor. Really, all Anya cares about is conquering the world. But somehow, her motivation to do better with studying works — except she’s studying all the wrong subjects. It’s such a typical Anya move, so Loid takes matters into his own hands.
DAYBREAK: DISCOUNT AGENT TWILIGHT

In Spy x Family 1×18, Twilight’s got competition when he goes to change Anya’s answers. Agent Daybreak is at Eden College to do some spy work for the East and be the ultimate rival to Twilight. It was great to see the spies juxtaposed against each other. Twilight is very proper and by the book, but Daybreak wants show off. Even in his introduction, he’s very casual and gives away too much information. We know that Twilight’s mission is at risk, but doesn’t explain much as to why in his reintroduction. This makes me hope that Daybreak returns — and for more reasons than one.
Recognizing Yuichi Nakamura as Daybreak was the highlight of this half of the episode. For those who can’t recognize him by name, perhaps Gojo Satoru or Hawks is more important to you. Either way, Nakamura’s sly and playful voice was perfect for Daybreak, the slacker spy who could only pretend to mimic Twilight at best. If anyone needs a voice for a carefree character, Nakamura is the man to go to. I only wonder who his English dub actor will be. Also, since when did Twilight become a household name? Is he not supposed to be a master of disguise? Granted, he’s not as flashy as Daybreak, but it is confusing how Twilight’s become a household name. It would be hilarious to see the series dive into what people think Twilight looks like and who he is.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- Yuri is still weird, yup, probably never getting over it. But he’s not the first weird anime character I’ve come across.
- Had no idea that Anya’s powers only worked with the moon. Is she like those calculators that only work with light?
- Bond passing out from Yor’s cooking had me dying. I know she wants to get better, but I hope for the sake of the anime that she doesn’t.
- Why didn’t Loid change Anya’s answers?
- Is anyone else wondering why anyone would hire someone as careless as Daybreak?
