It’s always a treat every week to watch the Spy x Family. Like its characters, there is always something lying underneath. It’s advertised as lighthearted and wholesome, but with war looming, there can be darkness in this series. Fortunately, the balance in its storytelling doesn’t make this anime too dark. In case you forgot, it’s Anya’s world we’re just living in it.
Last week, Anya met Bond, a psychic dog with the premonition that he’s going to be a mainstay in the Forger household. With Spy x Family 1×14, we see just how powerful putting Anya and Bond together can be. While there may be secret police, spies, and assassins – a telepath and psychic are enough to save the world.
CHANGING THE FUTURE

We should be pleased to know that Yor saved Anya from Keith and his killer dog. It’s of no surprise, but nice to know that these thugs didn’t try their luck with Yor. She can literally kill them as an assassin but has her priorities straight. While Yor reports this incident to the police, Bond has a vision that turns the happy Forger family from a trio into a sad duo. There’s a high chance that a bomb will go off at 5 pm and that Loid will die. Of all the crazy things that have happened in Spy x Family, Loid’s death wasn’t expected so soon. Granted manga readers have spoiled a lot, but this was a plot point I did not see coming.
Bond’s vision was a great way to show how his powers work. In the last episode, Bond saw that a piano was going to fall on a young boy so he saved him. As of Spy x Family 1×14, we know that the visions can be altered to a different reality. Too bad Anya wants to keep their powers hidden because then I think Loid would be a bit more comfortable looping her into his missions. Then again, having a little girl and a dog with him might confuse everyone and cramp his style as a secret agent.
KILLER SUSPENSE

Any time there’s a “change the future” plot, I am hooked. The anxiety is through the roof and I can’t help but keep glued every time. Even though it is anime and these characters aren’t real, the image of Anya looking at Loid’s dead body was too much for me. I needed to know if Anya was going to save him. Solving the bomb mystery was the best part of Spy x Family 1×14 – for two reasons.
First off, Anya and Bond complement each other. Together, they are like partners in crime who will assist each other no matter what. If Anya needs to get close to a deadly bomb, of course, Bond is going to push her to where she needs to go. If you need proof that Bond is going to be her best friend for life, here it is. Second, this episode had the perfect balance of humor and suspense. Anya knows that the bomb will go off once the clock reaches 5:00 pm, but can’t tell time. It was hilarious watching her realize the pitfalls of her master plan because she is so young. But while she may be lacking skill in one place, she’s smart in others. Her message on the door was enough to make Loid sense that something was wrong. So, in the end, he changes his own fate. That should be another Stella Star for Anya.
MASTER OF DISGUISE

Spy x Family is popular for how wholesome it is, but, Spy x Family 1×14 shows why this anime should be popular for another reason. The storytelling of this series sucks you into the mystery of it. The last act of the episode made us guess why Loid came to the minister. Keith Kepler was hot on the trail and Loid was sent to take him off the trail. With Agent Twilight as a master of disguise, I was guessing who he was disguised as. Maybe it should’ve been obvious, but it was still worth it, in the end, to see a “60-year-old geezer” do flips and evade bullets. Spy x Family truly has a holy trinity of action, humor, and suspense.
The stakes are high now that Loid is cornered by Keith’s bomb dog. If he shoots the bomb will go off. There’s also the chance he’ll kill the dog too, and let’s be honest, no one wants to see that. Here’s to hoping that Yor will swing into action again or perhaps Yuri will. This is the first time we are seeing him since he stopped by to say hello at the Forger house. The manga would have all the answers, but what’s the fun in spoiling everything?
OVERALL THOUGHTS
- As much as this episode was fun and probably one of my favorites, I need more Yor. She’s an assassin, let’s see it!
- Looks like Loid and Yor will meet Bond next episode, can’t wait to see their reactions.
- The way they break out the manga is perfect to keep you hooked each week.
- How about we stop cornering everyone into an alleyway with a threat, okay?
- BRB, Spy x Family 1×14 is enough for me to want to rewatch 1-13.
