Ghosts 2×22 “The Heir,” is a diabolical season finale that packs a massive punch. From beginning to end, the final episode of the season keeps on giving. This season finale perfectly sets up the future of Woodstone and gives us the classic ghostly shenanigans we’ve all come to expect. It’s going to be a long wait until season 3. Until then, the fandom can in engage in endless speculation about what’s coming next.
Isaac, the Ghost Writer
Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) may have pooped himself to death, but things are coming up roses for our favorite Hamilton-hater. While he may not have enough to buy Rhode Island, he can now technically consider himself a published author. His legacy will live on, thanks to Sam (Rose McIver). He’s allowed to tell his own story in his own authentic voice, something he was never afforded in life.
This is also a new chapter for Isaac and Nigel (John Hartman). Isaac is finally ready to confront his own anxieties about his new relationship. It makes sense that after an entire lifetime of being forced to hide his true self by society, he has trouble accepting the love he ultimately deserves. Thankfully, with the love of his afterlife by his side, he can continue his incredible journey of causing absolute chaos for his fellow ghosts.
A New Heir…Kind Of
Mythic Quest fans can rejoice, as Ghosts 2×22 “The Heir,” features Jessie Ennis in all her glory. Sure, she’s ultimately a villain trying to steal Woodstone right from underneath Sam and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar). She looks good doing it, though, and she makes us laugh. She’s the most lovable kind of villain that has so much potential. We’ll take what we can get.
In a way, it’s a shame that Kelsey isn’t actually a Woodstone. Ennis knows how to play the most unhinged characters to perfection, and her character would have fit in so nicely. Alas, the scammer was always going to have her true colors revealed. Arguably, the more troubling storyline is the lawyer who engages in blatantly illegal activity in the name of securing a haunted mansion.
Death and Reincarnation of a Friendship
In the wake of Ghosts 2×21, “Whodunnit,” Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) and Hetty (Rebecca Wisocky) were always going to have to have a reckoning. The stunning revelation that Hetty’s son murdered Alberta 100 years ago was obviously going to have to be discussed. The fact that Hetty kept this from Alberta for 100 years has caused a deep wound that isn’t so easily healed.
What works best about this story is that, firstly, Alberta’s grievances are treated as completely legitimate. She is able to go in front of a jury (or ghostly court) of her peers and describe the impact that this revelation has had on her afterlife. Hetty is given the chance not just to atone for the hurt she caused but to make genuine amends with Alberta. Hetty and Flower (Sheila Carrasco) are going to make hilarious roommates.
Who Got Sucked Off?!
Ghosts 2×22 “The Heir,” leaves us with just one question…WHO THE HECK GOT SUCKED OFF?! We need answers, yesterday. Unlike the BBC version, where this is always a looming possibility for the ghosts, the lore on this series states that Woodstone residents get sucked off once they’ve worked through and resolved something from their life. So which ghost actually got sucked off by the big beam in the sky?
The immediate possibilities are Hetty and Alberta. Hetty has been on a massive journey this season. Alberta, too, now has an answer to a major question that was left over from her life. If Isaac got sucked off just as he’s embarking on a new start with the love of his afterlife, there may be riots. Of course, this could all be a big misdirection. Nancy (Betsy Sodaro), the cholera ghost, may have finally found some peace.
True to form, Ghosts ends the season on a cliffhanger worthy of at least several Higgintoot gasps. The wait for season 3 is going to be nothing less than excruciating. In the meantime, anyone who has grown to love these ghost children has a lot to celebrate. This season has so much to revisit as we wait to see what’s next for Woodstone. This unhinged little family will need each other more than ever as this saga continues. In the meantime, let the fan theories commence!
