Parental estrangement is a real thing and if we’re being honest, most of the time the only people that will understand why it’s there are the child and the parent. Even then, chances are they won’t agree on the reasons that it is happening.
But what we do know is that it’s none of our business, it’s theirs. It’s something that they need to work through. Though Drew Barrymore has lived her life in the public arena, open about everything that she’s been through, leaving a lot of us with knowing so much about her.
But making assumptions about what she’s gone through or saying that she wants her Mom gone is too much.
In a recent interview with Vulture, Drew Barrymore, spoke about her relationship with her Mom and their complicated relationship, kinda. She was speaking about her neighbors and said, “All their moms are gone, and my mom’s not. And I’m like, ‘Well, I don’t have that luxury.’ But I cannot wait. I don’t want to live in a state where I wish someone to be gone sooner than they’re meant to be so I can grow. I actually want her to be happy and thrive and be healthy. But I have to fucking grow in spite of her being on this planet.”
Tabloids took this and ran with it. Drew can take a lot but she called the tabloids out for saying that she wished her Mom dead.
“You know what? To all you tabloids out there, you have been f–king with my life since I was 13 years old. I have never said that I wish my mother was dead. How dare you put those words in my mouth. I have been vulnerable and tried to figure out a very difficult, painful relationship while admitting it’s difficult to do while a parent is alive. For those of us who have to figure that out in real time, cannot wait as in they cannot wait for the time. Not that the parent is dead,” Drew said in her Instagram video.
She added, “Don’t twist my words around or ever say that I wish my mother was dead. I have never said that. I never would and in fact, I go on to say that I wish that I never have to live in existence where I would wish that on someone because that is sick.”
We have to agree with Drew. She’s been through enough and her relationship with her Mom is none of our business. But twisting words – that’s not acceptable and something we all need to be better and do better about. Just don’t do it.
