In a surprising turn of events, Superman & Lois has been renewed on The CW.
We say surprising, not because we don’t enjoy the show. We do. Immensely in part to the chemistry between Bitsie Tulloch and Tyler Hoechlin. But it’s surprising due to the fact that The CW has drastically changed from what it was a couple of years ago. They no longer are the providers of DCTV with multiple superhero shows under their belt. Now they’re the network that is going for an older demographic and has a series about Jesus. Seriously, Jesus.
So The CW keeping Superman & Lois around for a fourth season seems like a shock to say the least. And it’s not like it’s going to be an easy upcoming season. Season 4 will have an episode run count of 10 episodes, which is definitely less than its previous 3 seasons. And according to Deadline, this agreement comes after months of negotiating and the recent cancelation of Walker: Independence, The Winchesters, and Gotham Knights.
Furthermore, season 4 of Superman & Lois will have major budget cuts. That means that the 12 series regulars will see their roles reduced and the supporting cast will take a hit. That also means there will absolutely be some notable changes in the special effects for the show, which has done considerably well for a show on The CW. And there will be more of a focus on the family drama of it all, which this show already does well at.
At the end of the day, the renewal of Superman & Lois for a fourth season is feeling very much like the end of this version of the caped crusader. The only reason why it made it this long is because how it isn’t tied to the other superhero shows on this network. But also due to the fact that it’s Superman. He’s iconic in his own right. But there’s no way that we see this going on further, especially on a network like the barely recognizable The CW.
Superman & Lois is currently airing season 3 on The CW.
