We’ve been hearing about this Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action remake for a while. We’ve been worrying about it for ages. And now we’re finally getting our first look at it. During TUDUM, Netflix released the first images of the characters in costume — as well as a look at the show’s opening credits, which look very familiar to fans of the animated show, with Water. Earth. Fire. Air ….morphing into the Avatar: The Last Airbernder logo.
The characters certainly look better — and more accurate — than they did in the movie live-action adaptation, but there are valid concerns about whitewashing that have not been addressed. In fact, we still know very little about what’s coming in this adaptation, despite the fact that it’s now been confirmed it’s coming next year.
The opening credits are meant to be all nostalgia, in a way that’s very reminiscent of the animated show so many of us fell in love with. But the show will have to capture the attention, and the imagination of an entirely new generation if it is to succeed, and that generation — and the one that originally loved this show, will need some explanations if it’s ever going to love this show even a fraction of what it loved the one it’s based on.
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender live-action series arrives in 2024.
