The live-action How to Train Your Dragon has already found its Hiccup and Astrid in Mason Thames and Nico Parker, respectfully. Now it seems like they are expanding their cast according to Deadline. And it’s for some pretty notable characters from the beloved franchise: Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut.
Julian Dennison will be playing Fishlegs. They are known for playing Firefist in Deadpool 2. And they have an upcoming movie titled Y2K with A24. Playing Snotlout is Gabriel Howell. They don’t have many credits on their IMDb but they have worked on a TV miniseries titled Bodies and have an upcoming TV series titled Nightsleeper. Bronwyn James is going to be playing Ruffnut. They are known for their work on the TV series Cheaters and will be in the Wicked movie starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. And Harry Trevaldwyn will be playing Tuffnut. They also don’t have as many credits but were in the TV series titled Ten Percent and have an upcoming short called Idiomatic.
All four characters are quite essential to the How to Train Your Dragon storyline. They’re not just the comedic relief. They are heroes of their own. And alongside the two actors playing Hiccup and Astrid, I think we have a solid core of young heroes to cheer for. There’s also the added benefit that Gerald Butler will reprise his role as Stoick the Vast. Gobber the Belch will be played by Nick Frost, who is known best for the Cornetto trilogy.
All together, this cast is stacking up really well. The only thing that I’m hesitant about, and that I know other How to Train Your Dragon fans are as well, is the design of Toothless. We all remember what happened with Sonic and we hope to never repeat that again. The design of Toothless is timeless and is ingrained in a lot of the fans’ hearts. Plus if you’re going to do a live-action, you might as well honor it and do the best job you can. A design that doesn’t steer away from the known design of Toothless, is the direction to go. The only one.
How to Train Your Dragon was slated for March 14, 2025 release date. But it was pushed back to June 13, 2025.
