Chicago P.D. 11×09 “Somos Uno” is another episode of the show that is neither that interesting nor that well-thought-out, and the reasons why go back to the show’s mistakes. Instead, it’s just painful in the kind of way the show likes to deliver pain.
It’s not interesting enough because we don’t know enough about Torres. He comes and goes, and is sometimes in the background of episodes without doing too much. He had a bond with Jay, but now Jay is gone and his connections within the team are limited. There’s Kevin, but the show hasn’t really delved deeply into that. There could have been Hailey, but she’s leaving.
Other than that, what else have we seen from Torres? Kim had a nice moment with him at the beginning of Chicago P.D. 11×09 “Somos Uno” and the only thing I could think of during it was: have they ever had an important conversation about anything other than a case on screen? Torres is a ghost, and that’s on the show. The end result is that an episode like this one is much less effective because we don’t care about him nearly as much as we should.
Then, there’s the relationship, and boy was that a bad idea from the beginning. It was always going to get him to where he ended up, tortured on the floor, taking the literal hit for her. Because that’s the kind of guy Torres is. Intellectually, we know that. And no, the ending doesn’t make the relationship a better idea.
In fact, what did Torres get from this arc? What did we learn from it? Some backstory on him that they could have delivered in any other way, even in a monologue, and that’s it. We got an ill-advised romance to show for it and some more pain for Torres. Maybe he’ll get another tattoo to show for it and go about his business. Conceal, don’t feel. It might be Elsa’s motto, but it’s also the Chicago P.D. way, after all.
Things I think I think:
- Other than the in-unit ships, has Chicago P.D. ever introduced a decent love interest for anyone?
- This is a rhetorical question, I already know the answer is no.
- BUT DO YOU UNDERSTAND, DANTE?
- Do you?
- I like Kim being the big sister and all, but this is all just a bad idea on top of a bad idea.
- It’s “somos uno,” not “somos unos,” because, of course, it is because “somos unos” makes no grammatical sense. Would it be too much to ask for someone to check these things before I have every photo tagged with the grammatical error now?
- And to be even more nitpicky, I don’t think the right phrase for what she meant would be “somos uno,” maybe “somos iguales,” or “somos parecidos.” Anyway, get someone who knows Spanish, kthanx. Especially when writing Torres episodes.
- Man, I feel so bad for Torres. I’m squeamish and that HURT ME.
- And now he’s going to lie for her?
- I mean, not gonna feel bad for the asshole but …
- Right now I am so concerned about the new people who might be coming into this show next season.
- And I also have to be concerned about how they’re writing out Hailey, which is the most immediate concern.
