Lets have a talk about iconic movies and why we’re still on our train of asking, do they really need to be remade? What is remaking them offering to the situation? Is anything any better by that being done?
We know, we know – not everyone feels the same way. We’re painfully aware of it (you should read some of the things that people tell us in emails and comment). But in the same respect, we still have our opinion. The latest one we’re iffy on? Well that would be the remake of An Officer and A Gentleman.
Now, it’s no shade to Miles Teller, as it looks as though he’ll be starring in it. We know that we don’t always love his acting, but we do know that he’ll be good in the role. After all, we saw him in Top Gun: Maverick and we know he knows how to rock a military uniform.
It’s nostalgia that keeps us from wanting remakes and redos. We get it. We understand it. As we grow older, we know it more and more and well, it’s painful to say – but sometimes we can be wrong. But hey, isn’t that growth?
If we’re being honest, the thing that gives us hope about An Officer and A Gentleman update/redo/reboot/whatever is that Miles Teller and Temple Hill are involved.
If you aren’t familiar with the original movie it starred Richard Gere, Debra Winger and Louis Gossett Jr. (who would win a best supporting actor for his role). The original movie was about, “Zack Mayo (Richard Gere), a new member of the U.S. Navy, has a bad attitude. When he signs up for the Aviation Academy, he is met with the strict leadership of Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.), who gives Zack a rude awakening in terms of relating with other people. Through Foley’s guidance — and an unexpected romance with Paula (Debra Winger), an outsider who hangs around the naval base — Zack learns some tough lessons and discovers what he truly wants out of life.”
The modern day update – Dana Fox wrote the latest draft of the script, with the original draft written by Matt Johnson.
While we’re not sure how we’ll feel in the end, we know for now, we’re meh about this remake. But Miles Teller taking on a role in this movie is something we definitely can support.
