Fangirlish attended the 2024 Doctor Who panel at San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate Ncuti Gatwa’s iteration of The Doctor. He was joined by Millie Gibson, who plays his companion Ruby Sunday, and showrunner Russell T. Davies. And moderating the panel was creator Josh Horowitz. With so much going on at SDCC, we’ve put together a list of some of the favorite things we learned at the panel!
1. Kylie Minogue surprised Russell T. Davies
While watching “Rogue,” Davies got a message mid-episode. A bit miffed he thought, “Who’s texting me in the middle of Doctor Who?” It was Kylie Minogue herself apparently who had been watching the episode and saw The Doctor singing her song. And he was shocked, thinking that Minogue was off doing “glamorous” things and not watching his show.
2. Millie Gibson and her catchphrase
Every Doctor has a saying, from “allonsy” to “geronimo.” And when Gibson was asked what her catch phrase would be, she had her word ready: buzzing. The British slang term means to be “to be very excited and happy or energetic” according to the Cambridge Dictionary. Apparently she uses it all the time and that’s why the answer came so easy to her. “I say “buzzing” a lot. If we saved the universe, I’d just go, “buzzing.”
3. Ncuti Gatwa loved his Rogue outfit
Gatwa’s Doctor has only been around for one season so far and already he’s got plety of iconic looks that make him stand out as the best dressed Dcotor yet. And when talking about his favorite look, the one from “Rogue” clearly won out. Gatwa said, “It just felt good to have on. It felt really good. It looked hot.” And when ask by the panel moderator if he’d kept any outfits he confirmed that he’d “stolen a couple.”
4. Russell T. Davies and his relevant storylines are still on point
When talking about the Doctor Who spin-off The War Between The Land and The Sea, it became instantly clear that Davies is still here to tell use his writing to say something about the world we live in. “There’s a race that lives beneath the ocean. They wake up and they see the state of the oceans we have put them in. We have wrecked the place. And it’s war.”
5. Millie Gibson fangirled over Jinkx Monsoon
Season 14, or season 1 if Disney has anything to say, had plenty of guest stars, from Yasmin Finney to Jonathan Groff. But there one guest star that had Gibson absolutely fangirling: Jinkx Monsoon. She said, “I was trying to be so cool with her as well. I was really…I was such a fan.”
6. Ncuti Gatwa is down for Gillian Anderson to guest star
Keeping on the talk of guest stars, the Doctor Who also spoke about the upcoming Christmas special with Nicola Coughlan. Gatwa said she was a star while Davies said he didn’t think it would even go through. And while talking about the future and who else they’d like to see, someone shouted out Gillian Anderson. Before Doctor Who, Gatwa filmed Sex Education with Anderson. And the the way that Gatwa lit up at the thought of her joining the long-running BBC show was everything.
