The Last of Us season 2 isn’t until 2025 but HBO Max is serving up even more footage. This new look was part of a reel for upcoming shows coming to Max. In it we saw footage for The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy, The Franchise, It: Welcome to Derry, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and more. That “more” being The Last of Us season 2.
In the new footage we see Catherine O’Hara speaking to Pedro Pascal’s Joel. She asks Joel, “Did you hurt her?” He replies with “No.” before she continues with, “Then what? What did you do?” What follows is a bunch of scenes from season 2. We see a tattooed arm with scars, Ellie screaming, Tommy defending Jackson against invaders, survivors running through the forest, a first look at Isabela Merced’s Dina, Jeffrey Wright’s Isaac, and clickers. It closes out with Joel responding with “I saved her.” while crying.
After the new footage was released, many pointed out that season 2 has deviated from the second part of the game in one key way. Joel recounted events of the past to Tommy, but not to anyone else. And honestly, it’s not surprising. A straight adaptation would be boring and predictable and the show has to adapt for a general audience. But also, some things just don’t work on TV and some will need Joel’s decision to be revisited and broken down.
