The dictionary defines Ego as “A person’s sense of self-esteem or self-importance.” Every one of us has an ego. That’s not a bad thing because our ego is the thing that boosts our self-confidence. Now, ego can also be bad, depending on how big it gets.
Having a big ego can be unhealthy and lead a person to believe they are far superior and better than another person. If we’re all honest with ourselves, I’m sure we have all had a big ego at one point or another and wished we could get rid of that part of ourselves. Halsey does that in their latest music video for their new song, “Ego.”
The music video, written and directed by Halsey because she’s a genius, begins with two people, a male and a female sitting down for a nice dinner date. This dinner date is unique because Halsey plays the part of both the male and female parts, and it’s giving Mr. and Mrs. Smith-type vibes. Halsey sits in a little black dress with a fiery red wig and a painted lip that screams baddie.
The male sits across from her and drones on, seemingly talking himself up. It appears this one represents the overinflated ego. Halsey fakes interest and delivers an exaggerated “wow” when we know she is bored. Things get real when she reveals that she’s packing a gun. But, the twist is that their male counterpart is also packing.

As Halsey sings the chorus, “I think that I should try to kill my ego cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me,” a battle ensues, and we see her running all through the house, trying to escape. The male has a laid-back attitude that feels almost like he thinks he doesn’t have to do much and he’ll be able to win the fight. That overconfidence turns to frustration, and ultimately, he makes a mistake, and the female is able to take him down.
The music video for “Ego” is so entertaining; it looks like Halsey had fun filming it. It’s creative, and the theme is perfect. The song is also highly relatable. The lyrics “I’m all grown up but somehow lately I’m acting like a ……. baby” hit home for me, and I think they do for many people because being an adult is hard.
We know we are older, but we have those moments when we feel like a child. It’s safe to say that “Ego” is going to be in heavy rotation because I am in love with this song and the video.

In addition to Halsey’s new song dropping, a few days before the release, they released a trailer and announced the title of their fifth album and gave us a release date as well. Halsey’s fifth album, titled “The Great Impersonator,” is set to release on October 25th.
Based on the album trailer, it will span several decades: the 70s, 80s, 90s, and the early 2000s. In the trailer, Halsey says, “I really thought this album would be the last one I made.” As we know, they have been dealing with some significant health issues for a while, which we saw when their song “The End” was released.

As the trailer continues, Halsey wonders what kind of artist she would have been had she come out in the decades mentioned earlier. As they mention the decades, short snippets of songs from the album are played, and we see Halsey done up in the style fitting each year. Then, she delivers the most poignant ending that put me in my feels for a while.
As the trailer closes, Halsey says, “Am I still Halsey every time in every timeline? Do I still get sick? Do I become a mom? Am I happy? Lonely? Have I done enough? Have I told the truth? I spent half my life being someone else. I never stopped to ask myself If it all ended right now, Is this the person you’d be proud to leave behind? Is it even you?” and that’s where the album title “The Great Impersonator” was born.
As I said at the start of this piece, Halsey is a genius. Every album cycle is done in such a creative way. Fans were sent on a scavenger hunt a few days ago where they unlocked all four decades, which led to four special vinyls of “The Great Impersonator.” All of which cover the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s.
This fifth album is going to be something really special, and I am looking forward to hearing every single track and finding out how Halsey was inspired by the sounds of those decades, which she drew from.
