Emily Andras isn’t done telling stories when it comes to Wynonna Earp. The showrunner of the cult classic that ran from 2016 to 2021 left our heroes at a point she deemed “a fairytale ending.” But once “I reckoned with the fact that it had been a couple of years, I was like, “We should tell that story about getting older, maturing, and what happens after happily ever after.” That’s how we ended up with Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, the 90-minute special heading to Tubi that will hopefully lead to more specials and more Wynonna.
“There’s different ways to be happy and that’s a story we don’t tell that often,” Andras shared with Fangirlish at San Diego Comic-Con 2024, “So that kind of clicked together. And that really helped for all of us with the cast to be just like, “Let’s just be who we are now and tell that story.” Returning for Vengeance are cast members Melanie Scrofano, Tim Rozon, Dom Provost-Chalkley, Katherine Barrell, Varun Saranga, and Greg Lawson.
This new story for Wynonna and the gang is set to be on Tubi, another streaming platform. And while change can be scary, Andras felt supported. “There’s nothing you can’t do, the list is very minimal. And I pushed it, just so you all know,” Andras shared before clarifying that this support doesn’t mean she hasn’t felt supported previously. “I always felt fairly supported on Earp to tell the stories I wanted. We’ve told queer storylines, we’ve told family storylines, we’ve really told storylines that I feel like other networks would balk at. But by the time that everyone figured out we were doing it, it was too late. We did it, baby.”
There was one thing though that Tubi wasn’t expecting: Earpers. Andras shared that “Tubi has been so supportive. They were so excited. I think they really didn’t know what the fandom would be like.” From day one, the Earper community has been one of the shining lights of this show. They came through every week when the show was still on Syfy, campaigned week after week for the shows return when it was cancelled, and came to the panel at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con with shirts and banners because this is a community first and show second.
Andras also spoke on the state of TV today and how Earpers are different. “We all know during this time of fragmented television, like how hard it is to get loyal audiences, for people to show up, to kind of fall in love with something. So it was great. It’s been such a positive experience. Let’s do it again.” And we should. The hope with Wynonna Earp: Vengeance for Andras, the cast & crew, and fans is that this is a tipping point for more Earp stories. And with Scrofano and Rozon sharing that Vengeance feels like season 1, it’s a perfect stepping stone for new fans to enter this work and join the Earper family.
If we get more, Emily Andras already has some ideas. “How about Wynonna Tahiti? Can we? I’m just saying. I don’t mind the sexy sexy winter, guys. But let’s manifest that.” We couldn’t agree more.
