Happily ever after doesn’t exist. At least for Melanie Scrofano, who is returning to play the titular character in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance. The OG show ran for 4 seasons during 2016-2021. And even though she’s playing the same character, we’re not saying hi to the same woman, warrior, mother, or sister. This is an older Melanie Scrofano and Wynonna, both women who know that it’s all about the moments along the way in this crazy thing called life. It’s not about happily ever after.
Fangirlish got a chance to speak with Scrofano, alongside Tim Rozon, about their return in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance at the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con. Airing on Tubi, this 90-minute special sees the return of our favorites years after the show ended. This time around, there’s a “psychotic seductress hellbent on revenge against [Wynonna]…and everyone she loves.” And like we mentioned earlier. It’s not the same Wynonna or Melanie Scrofano that we knew.

“In this business, you can’t help but compare,” Scrofano shared, “You compare yourself to others, you compare yourself to yourself back in the day. And that’s what I was doing. I was going, “I’m her. But I’m not her.” Scrofano was around 35 when season one debuted on SyFy and she’s now 42. And in an industry that doesn’t make space for women past 30, Scrofano is experiencing a Hollywood in a way that people outside the industry might never understand.
If anything, Scrofano’s fears make her even more human, something that perfectly matches up with Wynonna Earp as a show as its humanity has always been it’s strongest aspect. Even Scrofano talking about how, “Weirdly, I felt bad. I felt like I was betraying people by being a little older and like ten pounds whatever.” or how because she’s got a different body now, those tight pants Wynonna’s known for, well they “don’t want to slip [on] anymore.” makes us as the viewer appreciate her and her character more.
As for Vengeance itself, “weirdly, it felt like season 1” for Scrofano. “It’s been a couple years, it’s a nice pickup from where we left off. You’re not gonna be blown away by where we start in terms of like, “What that makes no sense?!” It makes perfect sense. But it’s not…it’s still different enough that [you go] “Ok, our pals are on an adventure.”

Rozon shared this excitement for Vengeance, sharing, “To have something that you love, then lose it, is one thing. But then to have something you love, lose it, and then get it back, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that I think we were all kind of aware of. And then unfortunately it went by so quick that I personally need more. Because it also, just being with you again (to Melanie Scrofano) it’s not the worst.”
As for those joining the Wynonna Earp family now, Rozon is ready and echoes Scrofano’s sentiment that this feels like season 1. “We’re on a new home and for new viewers, anyone coming over to Tubi to watch it, if you don’t know everything, you’re gonna be fine. The special can be its own thing.”
