We are about a week away from the premiere of the second season of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s popular true-crime anthology Monsters. Season two, which is titled Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, will focus on the case of the real-life brothers Lyle (Nicholas Alexander Chavez) and Erik (Cooper Koch), who were convicted in 1996 for the murders of their parents, José (Javier Bardem) and Mary, Louise “Kitty” Menendez (Chloё Sevigny). It was the trial of the century and a very polarizing one at that, considering all that was involved. Particularly the abuse the boys testified to experiencing at the hands of their father. That’s highlighted in the final trailer for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
When the first trailer for Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story was released, it focused more on Erik (Koch) and his relationship with their father and highlighted his vulnerability. In contrast, Lyle was painted as over-the-top and the ringleader of the entire thing. In Trailer Two, Erik is the one speaking, and he comes off as the strong brother as we witness scenes of Lyle experiencing his side of the abuse. The trailer opens with Jose (Bardem) telling Lyle a rather disturbing story about a dog they owned and a spiked collar he used to discipline it. He’s essentially using this as a comparison of the ways he disciplines the boys.
We then see Kitty (Sevigny) speaking about how much she hates her kids because she feels like they ruined her dreams. She refers to them as parasites. We also see more of the brother’s bond as Erik says he would always choose his brother over his parents. We have to admit we liked this trailer much more than the first one because it gave us a look at both brothers and their closeness and the pain they were both dealing with, which led to them making one of the most life-altering decisions. We also saw many other cast members, like Ari Graynor, who plays the boy’s attorney, Leslie Abramson.
