Spooky season is right around the corner, and CBS has a treat for Ghosts fans with a sneak peek of the newest season. In the latest press release, we get a new set of photos and a synopsis for Ghosts Season 4, Episode 1, “Patience.” When we left the Woodstone Mansion at the end of Season 3, Patience had taken Isaac, a wedding was called off, an engagement occurred, and we were all left wondering how long it’d take until the lot realized one of theirs was missing. Thankfully, it won’t be long.
The official synopsis for Ghosts Season 4 reads: “While Sam and the ghosts race to find him, Isaac comes face to face with Puritan ghost Patience (Mary Holland) for the first time since she was lost in the dirt, on the fourth season premiere of the CBS Original series.” The episode is directed by Richie Keen and written by Trey Kollmer.
When it comes to Ghosts, the show often provides viewers with content they aren’t expecting. It gives us what we need and want long before we realize that it could be the perfect outcome. And in Season 4, there’s plenty of room to play with some of the narrative beats left dangling in Season 3. Here are five things we hope to see when the show returns this fall.
An Interesting Character Arc for Patience

Mary Holland is cast to play Patience, the Puritan Ghost, and there’s plenty of potential for her character arc to be something more than just a woman on a quest for vengeance. (Though, really, that’s okay, too. She deserves it for the abandonment and discomfort she must’ve lived through.) Still, Ghosts is often great at making us care about characters we don’t see every second, and whatever journey we get with her could maybe allow us to see more of the basement ghosts, too. There’s still a divide between the different spirits, and Patience’s arc could maybe continue threading different pieces together.
There’s also a chance that she might not be as big of a threat as we’re thinking and could, maybe, finally move on after a short while. But Mary Holland is hilarious, so here’s to hoping she stays around for longer than an episode.
Solid Growth for Isaac

After calling off his wedding with Nigel, Isaac has and needs to grow as a character. He needs a character arc that will give him the space to understand himself and his desires better and how he could be a better partner to someone else in the future. Whether that’s Nigel or someone else, we can’t keep reeling around his growth this season. Something has to give. Plus, this is essentially why Patience is here. She is a considerably unresolved part of his journey, and reuniting with her could lead to places that would be great for the character in Ghosts Season 4.
Further, while he’s fantastic comedic relief, I want to see more of the serious beats that Brandon Scott Jones often excels at bringing to life.
An Emotionally Satisfying Resolution for Sam and Her Father

During San Diego Comic Con this year, fans learned we’d meet Sam’s father in Ghosts Season 4. Portrayed by Dean Norris, Frank is described as “kindly and well-meaning, Frank arrives at Woodstone for his first visit in years, along with his new girlfriend. Frank and Sam have struggled to stay close since Frank divorced Sam’s mom when Sam was 10” (via CBS).
Sam’s journey with her mother was one of the most satisfying parts of the series and something the character desperately needed to move on with her life. While it’s often different with fathers and daughters, this reunion with her father could lead to tremendous growth for both characters, and I’m personally hoping it’s a more emotional one that’ll further dissect the underlying abandonment that frequently haunts Sam. It’s fascinating because it’s such a quiet part of her character that she gets attached to people because she’s longing for connections, so it’ll be interesting to look into the root of her upbringing a little more.
Trevor and Hetty Romantic Reunion

I will go down with this ship, hold the tides over, and refuse to give up because H-Money is it. They’re the couple of Woodstone Mansion, and I will not hear complaints. Hetty’s understandable need to move on last season resulted in the end of her relationship with Trevor, but there’s plenty of fire burning between them to let things go. Trevor clearly cares about Hetty (as evidenced in “Holes Are Bad”), and despite her antics, you can’t convince me that she doesn’t care about him.
They’re good together. The intimacy is excellent, the rapport is incredible, and there’s undoubtedly a dependable friendship at the helm of their relationship. Plus, Rebecca Wisocky and Asher Grodman want them together. When the actors ship it, who are we to reject the greatness? Ghosts Season 4 could benefit from more romantic relationships, and these two have all the bearings to give us a solid, second-chance romance.
All the Hijinks

Ghosts is unique because every episode gives us something wildly indescribable to laugh about. Between Pete learning his ghost power and then traveling to Alberta having a poltergeist fling, and even Isaac’s obsession with dinosaurs, there’s always something happening at Woodstone Mansion. There’s never a dull moment, and with more episodes this season, we want the season to go all out. Hold nothing back. Make me cackle about something obscene, then cry the next minute. Only Ghosts could manage it.
