Prepare to get to know the 2023-24 season through the eyes of the NBA’s biggest players – Jimmy Butler (Miami Heat), Anthony Edwards (Minnesota Timberwolves), LeBron James (Los Angeles Lakers), Domantas Sabonis (Sacramento Kings), and the Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics). Starting 5, the 10-episode Netflix sports series, premieres on Wednesday, October 9, on Netflix. The streamer released a trailer, key art, and new photos for the upcoming series, following the players on and off the court.
Starting 5 sees the NBA players balance everything from wins and losses on the court to expectations and pressures within competition, training and recovery, and quality time with their families. The trailer starts with LeBron James’s daughter, Zhuri Nova James, saying, “Everything thinks our dad is the legend of basketball, but he’s just like a normal person.” The footage then cuts to the legend himself dressed as Beetlejuice.
The trailer also sees the players discuss the access of Starting 5, with Sabonis saying, “No one’s ever seen me in an intimate space like this.” The athletes also discuss their skills, with Jimmy Butler saying, “I’m like the king of all trades. I think that’s what the saying is. The Black king of all trades.” All of which proves that Starting 5 will undoubtedly deliver “an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball.”

The sports series “captures their battles on and off the court as they chase greatness, push through injuries, and balance the demands of family and legacy,” per its synopsis.
What does that mean for the five professionals at the heart of Starting 5? “James pushes himself harder than ever to stay healthy – and dominant – in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise. Butler’s relentless drive propels the Heat, Sabonis anchors the Kings with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the Celtics in their quest for a record 18th championship.”
Starting 5 comes from UNINTERRUPTED in association with Higher Ground Productions and Omaha Productions. Peter J. Scalettar is the showrunner and director. Susan Ansman and Trishtan Williams also direct. Maverick Carter, Jamal Henderson, Philip Byron and Randy Mims (for UNINTERRUPTED); President Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis (for Higher Ground); Peyton Manning, Jamie Horowitz and Sam Pepper (for Omaha) executive produce the docuseries. Sami Khan, Matt Rissmiller, and Camara Rose co-executive produce.
