Secrets and lies always find their way to the surface.
The thing about small towns is that there are a lot of secrets. There are a lot of lies that can be held in, but it doesn’t matter, they are still there. It can be days and it can be years, but it all comes to the surface.
And when it comes to the surface, it can be complicated. Really complicated.
The Chicken Sisters explores age-old grudges and secrets that are kept. It reminds us of the things that we think we know and the things that we don’t know. It explores the relationships that we have and the relationships that we want.
And above all, it explores betrayal.
Because there is a lot of betrayal going on here.

GUS AND HER BOYS
I wondered how it was that Gus became so close with all of the men in her life because she admittedly doesn’t trust men.
But seeing that Gus was put in that position because of people saying things that weren’t true about her, well that was heartbreaking to see. She was looked down upon because of being a Mimi’s girl. But who Gus was, was just a person trying to survive.
Finding that Gus has health issues, makes sense. I just wish that they would address her hoarding issues more. I mean yes, after this week’s episode, they will have no choice but to do just that. But that’s a different story.
In this week’s episode, Kitchen Clash has the men of Frannie’s and Mimi’s having to create a side dish. Gus was doing everything that she could to make sure that Sergio had everything he needed, but he knew that all wasn’t okay with her. He tells her that they need help and to rest, but she’s definitely not going to back down.
But Sergio goes to get Mae to help him prep and for Mae that’s the best thing in the world. She thinks her Mama is softening up to her. Little does she know that she’s not. What is happening is that Sergio is trying to look out for Gus.
I would feel bad for Mae, but I feel like she’s also got to learn from her mistakes. She owes her Mom a huge apology for all the times that she’s shut her out. I know, I know Gus has let her down too. It’s a complicated thing.

SABRINA AND LINZEY
Speaking of mothers and daughters.
I love for Sabrina that she’s bonding with her daughter. You can tell that it’s really hard for her to have a disconnect with her child, but exciting for her when her daughter willingly wants to bond with her.
I can’t imagine being a parent and thinking about how your kid favors one parent over the other. I can’t imagine it feeling like you can’t catch a break and no matter what you do, but knowing that your love for your child will never change.
I loved seeing how excited Sabrina was, but then I also felt for her when she felt like her daughter wasn’t interested in what she was doing at all. Kids can be hard to read and it is hard for them to tell their parents how they feel. It’s just a matter of time until it comes to light. We should all recognize that.
Sabrina doesn’t have the easiest job – producing and making television isn’t easy. She’s got to be everywhere and anywhere all the time. Linzey just wants to spend time with her Mom. Her Mom just wants to make a good life for her.
The balance can’t be easy.

A SIDE FOR THE AGES
We’re at the event and I have to say, I didn’t expect Kitchen Clash to go so hard. Sabrina was smart and tossed a twist – the prep that the teams had done was for the other team. She made Frannie’s and Mimi’s switch fridges and they would have to come up with a side from the other team’s prep.
For Sergio, he’s not going to show any weakness. He lucks out too, because the fridge he gets is filled with things to make hush puppies. Don’t ask me what it was that Frank Jr. was going to make, because I have no idea.
When the fridges change, Sabrina gives them a second. It’s then when she mentions about Frankie coming to New York and Mae was going to host her. Amanda had no idea about this. None. She thinks Sabrina is trying to produce her, but she’s not. She thought that she knew.
When cameras go back on, Sabrina encourages smack-talking, but Sergio isn’t going to do that. It drives Frank Jr. insane. He doesn’t know what to do and storms out.
When finally deciding what to make – both have made something so very southern. Fried Green Tomatoes and Hushpuppies. I was thrilled that Sergio won, but I didn’t expect the meltdown between Sergio and Frank Jr. that happened right after.
I loved that Sergio told Frank Jr. not to speak to his Mom like that, but I was shocked that the two ended up in a fistfight. Sergio held himself together, even when getting sucker punched.
Frank Jr was out of line and I am not sure what his issue is. I think it partly has to do with those tapes that he’s listening to. He thinks that being a man means asserting some sort of dominance but violence is never the answer.

LAND LOTS AND KISSING SPOTS
I think that the person I am rooting for the most in this series is Amanda. I know, I change it a lot, but I really think that Amanda, Mae, and Gus are in a situation where they all need support.
Amanda and Mae are both stuck in their own ways. Each one trying to escape something different as far as feelings go.
Amanda is trying to convince herself that she can choose to be happy, but she’s not. She’s not happy at all. Frank Jr. won’t say why he got a vasectomy, he’s blaming his Mom for losing the side bake-off, and he’s trying to show that he loves his wife, even though I think he doesn’t.
Amanda goes to talk to Gus, and Gus won’t let her in, so she goes to Mimi’s to “check on Sergio” even though I do think it wasn’t what she was really setting out to do.
She tries, again, to dismiss, the kiss. But the kiss meant something to her. She just keeps trying to tell herself that it doesn’t – because she doesn’t want to be a cheater. She tries to dismiss Sergio, saying that he won’t even be there long.
Sergio takes her for a drive, and I mean we can all tell because she got in the car, she likes him.
He takes her to a plot of land, where he tells her that he’s building his home. He loves the town. He isn’t going anywhere. He tells her what he thinks of her and how much he likes her. Honestly, I was so moved by their exchange.
I think that when it comes to Amanda and Sergio, I want them together because they are both happy together. I don’t agree with cheating, but I also don’t think that you need to settle in life. It’s too short to not be happy.

BEST FRIENDS
I get that Kenneth and Mae have a complicated friendship. She deserted him. She left him when he needed her and then wasn’t there for him when he needed her. BUT, I don’t get why it is that he’s mad that his husband doesn’t think that Mae is that bad.
Maybe it’s hurt? Maybe it’s that he doesn’t want his husband to be hurt. IDK. But his reaction is confusing to me.
What I did love was the way that they made up and the way that they both realized what they did. I loved Mae asking him what was wrong with her and him telling her honestly that he doesn’t know because he doesn’t know her. It was one of the most honest moments of this show and I needed that.
I needed Mae’s fiance to show up and for there to start to be something there that could/should be fixed. I needed to see them all start to find a road to resolution – whatever that may be.
TRAITOR
Frank Jr. is the villain of this show and you can’t convince me otherwise. He’s the absolutely worst human being and we all need to recognize that. Him calling – from the payphone – the Department of Health – on Gus.. F*** HIM! He’s so selfish and he is so wrong.
Between him and his Mama… ya know. Frannie’s people are horrid.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- I feel so bad for Gus. What she’s going through and how she’s feeling — it’s just so wrong for her to have to go through
- Nancy is truly naive and honestly, I can see why Frank Jr turned out so crappy
- I love Sergio
- Patrick – we need more time with him
