Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie is Maria Callas, one of the most iconic performers of the 20th century in Pablo Larrain’s Maria. The Netflix film follows the American-Greek soprano as she retreats to Paris after a glamorous and tumultuous life in the public eye. And this biopic reimagines the legendary soprano in her final days as she reckons with her identity and life.
With the official trailer for Maria here, it’s clear that Jolie is A) going for that Oscar and B) she’s serving looks after looks. And this is all while wearing coke bottle glasses. Still. A stunner. A vision. An icon. Throughout the trailer we see her in a multitude of black looks and regal gowns. But she even makes nightgowns and sweaters look like opulence and royalty all rolled into one.
But it isn’t just the looks that are serving. Jolie is as well with her performance. As the trailer progresses it becomes clear that the soprano’s voice is tied with a downward spiral that leads her to isolation and spending her final years in Paris. And Jolie channels Callas passion, joy, and her frustration at the way that her life is changing and the scandals that follow her.
