Trick or Treat! Halloween has arrived on board The Odyssey! We thought Doctor Odyssey episode 4, Wellness Week, was a chaotic week, but we were not prepared for the chaos that ensued on Doctor Odyssey season 1 episode 5, “Halloween Week.” Sure, we assumed there would be some wildness, but we didn’t expect to learn about a new condition that had us saying, “You can do what now?” Read on to find out what we’re talking about.
In Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 5, we learn Captain Massey hates Halloween, but it’s not because of the costumes; he’s spent many Halloweens at sea. Seeing everyone dressed in their costumes makes him miss his lost time. He eventually gets in on the fun. No, he doesn’t dress up. He’s still the Captain, after all. But he does assist Tristan, who loves Halloween. The holiday brings out his inner child, and he wins the Halloween costume contest every year. Only this year, with Max onboard, he’s got some competition.

Max, who wasn’t really a Halloween dress-up kind of guy, has chosen to see the world in a different way after he almost lost his life to Covid. He gets really in the spirit and has a lot of fun playing dress-up. And his costumes were pretty amazing and coincidentally the same as Tristan’s, but… if we’re being honest, his were so much better. That’s probably why Captain Massey told him to let him win; he knew Max would. On the other hand, Avery is not a Halloween fan either, but it’s more so because she can never think of a good costume. We get it; sometimes, the pressure of dressing up and coming up with the right costume can be a chore. Like Captain Massey, she does come around and even comes up with the perfect couples costume (because that’s what it was) with Max. Nurse-feratu and Doctor-Acula? Could they be more obvious?
Of course, with all that fun there was still a lot of work to be done to help out the passengers needing medical care. Max, Avery, and Tristan dealt with a lot of interesting cases, but the one that had us the most intrigued was the dude who was literally sweating blood. Yes, you read that right. He was sweating blood. We didn’t even know you could do that. And this writer is a Nurse. It’s a condition called Hematohidrosis, and it can be brought on by fear or, in the case of bloody sweaty wolf dude, arousal because he was getting hot and heavy on the deck when it happened. After Max treats him, he seems totally unfazed by it. We don’t know about you, but if we were sweating blood, we would not be calm afterward.
Later in the episode, Max, Avery, and Tristan deal with the husbands of a pair of twins. Both of the guys came down with African Sleeping Sickness, which made them wander about the ship in a zombie-like state. Initially, this sent the team into a panic because before they realized what was actually affecting the two men, they thought it was a contagion. Thankfully, it wasn’t, and the guys recovered. That’s honestly thanks to Julia and Sarah, another married couple on board.

Julia and Sarah go on a treasure excursion with other passengers, and then Julia decides to be adventurous and try to find a gold coin. She and Sarah go off the beaten path, as it were, and Julia’s arm gets stuck under a boulder after a freak accident. Max and Avery assist that one, and it’s a scary situation. Both feared that to save Julia before high tide, they had to cut her arm off. That’s not an ideal solution, and Julia’s wife is far from okay with that, but she understands what will happen if she doesn’t let Max and Avery do something. Because of Avery’s excellent assessment skills, she realizes that they will not have to cut off Julia’s arm, and she can rescue her by dislocating her elbow. Hey, a dislocated elbow beats having to get your arm cut off any day. Now, back to how Julia and Sarah saved the twin’s dudes. Had it not been for Sarah mentioning the sand fly bites she got while Julia was being rescued, Avery would not have put two and two together and realized what was causing the dude’s symptoms.
Not one to break tradition, Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Episode 5 did not let us go without one of the team becoming a patient. This time, it was Tristan’s turn. Remember we told you how much Tristan loves Halloween? Well, that love for the spooky holiday almost cost him his life. Early in the episode, he “Sweeney Todds” his bedroom, and a set of white gas lanterns give him a case of carbon monoxide poisoning that neither Avery nor Max picks up on. Tristan wasn’t acting right through a lot of the episode so we’re surprised they didn’t. They chalked it up to him being overly competitive about the costume contest. Vivian, the new chef who has only been working on the ship for two weeks, noticed something was off with Tristan. Her seeking out Max and Avery for help is what saved his life.
We’re happy Vivian could come through for Tristan, but we were disappointed by how little we saw her throughout the episode. We hope that will change, and we will see her more because we’d like to see what will happen between her and Tristan, ya know, when he’s not hallucinating. We’re also wondering who is next up on the staff to come down with something because so far, the Captain has had something resembling a heart attack, Avery got her appendix taken out, and Tristan got carbon monoxide poisoning. Does that mean that Max is next? Or Vivian? Or maybe the rest of the crew?
Other Nautical Thoughts

- This week, we had an octopus breaking glass on the entrance dome.
- Good idea with the extra sanitizers set up around the buffet, Avery.
- Also, after COVID-19, are people still eating at buffet-style places?
- Max’s Captain Jack Sparrow costume and impersonation was spot-on.
- We were kinda feeling that Poseidon look too.
- Tristan didn’t look half bad dressed up either.
- Avery’s ceiling fan costume… she gets a B for effort. Because it was creative.
- Avery really had to lock up bandages because people would steal them to make a mummy costume.
- More Vivan, please.
- More Vivian and Tristan, please.
- Don Johnson was one of the most entertaining people in this episode. His reactions to every ridiculous moment were priceless.
- The passengers thinking Captain Massey was dressed up like someone from The Love Boat…
- Tristan wins the costume contest dressed in Captain Massey’s uniform as Captain Stubing from Love Boat.
