NCIS Season 22, Episode 6 ‘Knight and Day’ is a very good Jessica Knight episode, but also a very good team episode. Knight gets a lot of necessary, if not character development, at least perspective, in this hour—but the team also has a chance to showcase the fun dynamics they can have, even in the middle of a pretty complicated case.
Knight still has a long way to go to figure out not just what she wants, but who she really is. But at least after this episode, it feels like she’s taking tiny steps forward. And the fun thing is that, no matter where she ends up, she has people who will always have her back.

THE DYNAMIC TRIO – AND PARKER

McGee, Torres, and Knight are very good together, and they feed off each other in a way that feels very believable. NCIS Season 22, Episode 6 ‘Knight and Day’ showcases the way their dynamics work, with McGee and Torres basically teaming up to tease Knight, who doesn’t really let them get away with it, but also sometimes can’t do anything to stop them. It’s all screaming siblings and it’s beautiful.
Parker fits into these dynamics quite well, because he sometimes entertains them but he’s never quite at the same level as the three, both because that isn’t him, and also because he’s still their boss. And yet it’s undeniable that Parker is a very different boss than Gibbs was—and that this NCIS team actually benefits from the dynamics Parker brings.
That’s not a knock on Gibbs. The show was one thing when he was around, and it’s become a different thing since he left. It had to. That it managed to do so in a way that works as well as it does is a testament to the casting department, the writers, and Gary Cole. They all understood what NCIS was, what it could be, and how those two things could be different without one taking away from the other. And hopefully, so do fans.

YOU CAN’T KEEP HIDING

April Day, or Melinda Warren, however you want to call her, is right. Jessica is hiding, she’s hiding from really confronting her feelings—not about Jimmy, not really, but about the future she can see with him. She’s also hiding from the possibility of moving on, and sometimes it feels like she’s hiding from a true understanding of herself. In a way, she was closer when she was still at Camp Pendleton than she is now. Because at least then, she had a reason to think about things.
Jessica wanted to come back for Jimmy, that much is clear. He wasn’t the only reason, of course, but he was a reason. And yet, when she came back, she and Jimmy just had a conversation that seemed to reinforce the status quo, without Jessica being able to exteriorize that, at some point, it did feel to her like she was ready to stop running and be with Jimmy, whatever that meant.
Of course, part of this is that they’re both afraid of conversation, and part of it is that Jessica doesn’t want to say that unless she’s sure, because she doesn’t want to hurt Jimmy again, and she doesn’t want to get hurt again. But how can you be sure of things like that? What will make her sure? It’s hard to tell. Sometimes, in life and in relationships, you have to take a leap of faith. You have to make a decision and trust yourself to be able to not just hold to your decision but to work for it if needed.
Right now, Jessica Knight doesn’t trust that. Doesn’t trust herself. And that’s what she’s still searching for, that certainty about what she wants—or at least, that certainty that she can be the person Jimmy needs her to be. Whether she can ever find that, or she’s going to have to leap, I guess we will find out.
MORE: What did we think of NCIS Season 22, Episode 1? What about NCIS Season 22, Episode 2?
Things I think I think:
- I can see Torres being her plus one. I can understand it. I feel it. The siblings vibe is strong.
- Also, he’s so nice trying to take care of her. Truly, siblings vibe.
- Whose jacket is it indeed?
- “Listen, BABY?”
- “McGee and I have another case”? LOL. The team dynamics are strong in this episode.
- Agent Useless?
- It DID look like they were trying to take a selfie.
- “Agree is a strong word.”
- LOL Parker also wants the gossip.
- I don’t want to agree with her, but you are using your career to hide from something, Jessica.
- Not that comfortable shoes are a way of telling!
- “Meaningful relationships”? Man, she’s got you figured out!
- Did she really ask Knight if she’d considered freezing her eggs?
- Nick, why you gotta mention these things in front of Jimmy? Why even get him involved?
- Sure, sure, suuuure Jimmy. It’s so convincing when you say that you just want Jess to be happy.
- April Day. Knight and Day. HA.
- Nick changing his jacket is hilarious.
- Okay, I see the Carla Merino thing is going to last.
- “I’m way too busy to date?”
- And then “you can’t keep hiding”?
- The episode went HARD.
