In Disney’s continued mission to make a live-action movie of all of their animated classics, we now have our first official teaser for Lilo & Stitch. The original was released in 2002, making it 23 years since it’s release by the time the live-action hits theaters. And it tells the story of a young girl who adopts a “dog” from the local pound. Little does she know that it’s actually a dangerous scientific experiment taking refuge on Earth.
The official first look is a good indicator that Stitch isn’t going to receive the same fate as Sonic’s first horrifying iteration. He looks like Stitch, from the little divots in his ears to the little tuft of hair on the top of his head. He even sounds like him, roaring as he comes on screen and destroys a sand castle replica of the iconic Disney castle. It’s a great start of a film that’s going to follow the lead of the original animated classic.
But just because we like the official first teaser doesn’t mean we still aren’t worried for what’s to come.
If you’re going to do Lilo & Stitch we’re going to need the dancing, the Elvis costume, and the duck bed time story. We’re also going to need Disney not to exclude the clear outlook they animated film had on tourists on Hawai’i. Because as a kid, this was the movie that sparked loads of research into Hawai’i as a community, how tourists change things, and the history of the Pacific Ocean island.
