When the girl of his dreams (Amber Midthunder) is kidnapped, everyman Nathan Caine (Jack Quaid) turns his inability to feel pain into an unexpected strength in his fight to get her back in Novocaine. Directed by Dan Berk & Robert Olsen, Novocaine is Quaid’s opportunity to get into the action hero genre. He’s dabbled with Prime Video’s The Boys. And we can’t forget he starred in The Hunger Games as Marvel aka that little jerk who killed Rue. But Novocaine puts him front and center with the elevated stakes of him not being able to feel pain.
In the official trailer, the most outlandish moments come after Nathan decides to steal a cop car and chase after the bankrobbers who have kidnapped Midthunder. His character doesn’t feel the scorching heat of a cast iron or that of a deep fryer when puts his hand in one to get the gun the bad guy dropped. Later on he take a knife through his hand like nothing, a spiked trap to his back like nothing, and then punched the ground to get glass in his knuckles. Nothing can stop Nathan because he A) can’t feel it and B) he has no common sense and will do anything for this girl he thinks is the one.
Either way, Novocaine is an over-the-top action flick that allows Quaid to continue growing his portfolio as his breakout role on The Boys is coming to an end with the series final season. It’s also a reminder to those who think he’s a nepo baby (his parents are Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan) that he’s an actor of him own 8 upcoming projects on the horizon and iconic roles in Star Trek: Lower Decks and My Adventures with Superman.
