The Noah Centineo spy thriller The Recruit has met its end.
The cancellation comes after The Recruit season 2 premiered on January 30th. That means the show has been in limbo when it comes to a cancellation only for about a month. And it’s a reflection of the sad state of streaming that views within a month could determine, or help determine, whether you will be renewed again.
News of the cancellation has been reported by outlets like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. But we’re not seeing a direct statement from Netflix. Instead Colton Dunn, who played Lester Kitchens in the series, confirmed that the series had been canceled on Threads. He wrote, “The Recruit has been canceled y’all. Such a bummer.” He also followed it up with “Thanks if you watched. I’m available now!”
The Recruit followed Owen Hendricks, played by Centineo. He was a CIA lawyer who becomes involved in a bunch of different international conflicts after an asset tries to expose their relationship to the agency. Season 2 saw Hendricks in Seoul, South Korea. He ends up rescuing Jang Kyun and his wife Nan Hee from a dangerous situation. But it also sees him facing a betrayal from Nichka and an uncertain future. Basically it’s left on a cliffhanger. And will never know.
Netflix has started earning a reputation within the streaming space of prematurely canceling shows. Last year they canceled The Brother’s Son, Deadboy Detectives, and Kaos after one season. Deadboy Detectives had a cult following right after the show’s release. And Kaos was canceled so early after the debut on Netflix that people didn’t even realize it had premiered, leading to a lot of commentary about Netflix not letting their shows even breathe before canceling them. Other shows canceled by Netflix last year include Girls5Eva, That 90s Show, and Unstable.
