It’s good news for the Los Angeles Waves! Netflix has renewed Running Point for a second season – only one week after its premiere. The sports comedy’s 10-episode debut season dropped on Thursday, February 27. The series centers on Kate Hudson as Isla Gordon, who becomes president of the basketball franchise after a scandal forces her older brother, Cam, to resign. Before that, despite knowing the game inside and out, Isla’s only place in the Gordon family business was as the team’s charity coordinator – in the basement of the building.
Upon taking the job, Isla has to find a new sponsor for the team, tries to make a more equitable revenue stream for teams, helps a new player overcome his fears, and more. Plus, the Los Angeles Waves face troubles, including a losing streak that almost keeps the team from making the playoffs. All the while, Isla faces comments and doubts about her capabilities based on her appearance, age, and, unsurprisingly, nepotism from the public and even her own brothers.

Running Point Season 1, Episode 10, “Game Seven,” ends with Isla overcoming the odds. Unfortunately, the Waves get kicked out of the playoffs. Not to mention, the team’s coach, Jay Brown, is leaving California for Boston to be near his kids. That move comes after Jay and Isla kiss post-playoffs-loss, which adds an extra layer of anticipation about what’s next. Plus, Isla is still trying to win back her fiancé, Lev, after Running Point Season 1, Episode 9, “The Playoffs.”
Beyond Isla’s personal life, there’s a hesitant hint of optimism in the air. It seems like the franchise can come back bigger and better next season – until the last-second cliffhanger. It’s truly down to the buzzer. Isla walks into her office and finds that Cam is back to reclaim his throne. Needless to say, Running Point has plenty to unpack when it returns for Season 2. Hudson speaks to that excitement in the renewal announcement video Netflix shared on Instragram.
“A good basketball team owner knows when to listen to the fans. So we hear you, and so did Netflix. Running Point is officially coming back for Season 2! Thank you so much, everyone who watched the show so far. I’m just beyond thrilled because you’re really the reason why we’re able to come back and do another season. So thank you, and we’ll see you next season,” Hudson said.

Running Point also stars Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Roberto Sanchez, Uche Agada, and Dane DiLiegro. The sports comedy comes from writer and executive producers Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, who is the showrunner.
“We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a Season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show,” Kaling added in a statement, per Tudum. “We still cannot believe the response from audiences — thank you to everyone who has watched! Thank you to our partners at Netflix, Warner Brothers, our star who brought this show to life, Kate Hudson, and of course executive producers Jeanie Buss and Linda Rambis, without whom there would be no Running Point.”
Los Angeles Lakers president and co-owner Jeanie Buss and the team’s manager of special projects Linda Rambis are executive producers on Running Point. Netflix confirms that the series gets real-life inspiration from Buss’s experiences with the Lakers. The show’s executive producers also include Kate Hudson and Howard Klein (3 Arts Entertainment). Jordan Rambis produces. Running Point’s studio is Kaling International, in association with Warner Bros. Television.
