If you rewatch Gilmore Girls annually (or you still mourn Bunheads), do we have a new show for you! This April, Prime Video is debuting the first season of Étoile, a new dramedy from Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. Set in the world of elite ballet, it’s a showbiz drama and, presumably, chock-full of the Palladinos’ signature banter.
Prime Video has just released the first preview about the show, and it includes several first look images. Plus, we’re getting some details on characters, cast members, and, of course, when to watch! Here’s everything we know about Étoile on Prime Video so far.
What Is Étoile About?
The official logline highlights the show’s bi-continental ballet premise. “Set in New York City and Paris, the eight-episode Étoile follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies, as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars.”
With this description, it sounds like Étoile on Prime Video should appeal perfectly to fans of the Palladinos’ previous work. It’s like Bunheads on a The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel budget!
Who Is in the Étoile Cast?

The cast of Étoile on Prime Video includes a mix of Palladino-verse favorites and new faces. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel vets Luke Kirby and Gideon Glick are among the leading names, and Gilmore Girls favorites Kelly Bishop and Yanic Truesdale are joining them. Also, you might recognize David Alvarez from his role as Bernardo in the West Side Story remake.
The full cast includes:
- Luke Kirby as Jack
- Charlotte Gainsbourg as Geneviève
- Gideon Glick as Tobias
- Lou de Laâge as Cheyenne
- David Alvarez as Gael
- Yanic Truesdale as Raphael
- Taïs Vinolo as Mishi
- Simon Callow
- Kelly Bishop
Additionally, in interviews with Vanity Fair, the cast revealed a little more about some of their characters! To begin with, Kirby and Gainsbourg play the directors of the NYC and Paris ballet companies, respectively. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Palladino show without some romantic intrigue, too! In addition to being professional collaborators, Jack and Geneviève have a personal past that complicates things.
“I don’t know for how long they were lovers, but it gives [Geneviève] a real animosity against him, and at the same time, a real friendship,” Gainsbourg told Vanity Fair. “At one point I really need him, at another I’m totally against him. Then he will deceive me in another way…maybe later on.”
Glick, meanwhile, plays an American choreographer whose quirks clash with French style. Besides him, the American side of things is rounded out by a pair of ex-partners. de Laâge’s Cheyenne is one of the American company’s star performers, a top talent who nudges her old partner Gael (Alvarez) out of self-imposed retirement.
When Does Étoile Come Out?
The first season of Étoile arrives on Prime Video on Thursday, April 24. Instead of a weekly release, all eight episodes of the season will drop on the same day. That won’t be the end of Étoile on Prime Video, though! The show has already been picked up for a second season, with production and release dates yet to be announced.
