Dakota Johnson, known for Fifty Shades of Grey, leads Materialists, a new romance drama for A24 as a successful New York matchmaker. Her character Lucy finds herself in the middle of a love triangle at the worst time in her life. And it’s giving early 2000’s rom-com vibes, which excites us because some of our favorite films are The Wedding Planner, Serendipity, and While You Were Sleeping. They’re messy romantic classics and rewatchable at any moment in time.
Lucy has caught the eye of a charming and wealthy man at one of her matchmaking banquets played by the charming Pedro Pascal. She isn’t looking for love at the height of her career but seems to be pulled to him. However, Lucy runs into her ex-boyfriend on the same night, played by Chris Evans. From the looks of it, Lucy hasn’t fallen out of love with him, which complicates things. Her inability to choose who she wants to be with throws her life into chaos.
Lucy has to listen to her heart but it’s difficult. Love always is. Especially when you have to pick between Pedro Pascal and Chris Evans in a movie by Past Lives Celine Song.
