The worst thing about the internet is that people feel a sense of power and the ability to say whatever they want, whenever they want. The issue is that behind a computer screen, there is a bit of safety. You feel like you won’t have to stare anyone in the face and you can simply mute or block before you have to see their response.
No one gets it worse than a celebrity does. Selena Gomez has definitely been put through the ringer when it comes to social media. Everyone has so much to say about her, who she’s dated, and what she does. If I was her, I would have gone offline a long time ago.
But she’s tried that. She’s taken breaks, stepped away. paid attention, ignored, and everything in between. There is nothing that she can do that she’s not criticized for. While on Jay Shetty’s On Purpose podcast, she talked about the reception that she’s gotten on line about her physical appearance.
WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY
“I was also going to point out that women have it much worse,” Gomez said on Jay Shetty’s podcast On Purpose alongside her fiancé Benny Blanco, who said he ignores criticism on social media. “From my perspective it’s pretty wild, and I think this isn’t news to anybody, that obviously women have a lot more intense feelings from their appearance to what they’re wearing to everything.”
She then added, “When I get prepared for an event, 90 percent of the time I’m just like, ‘I just hope I can take the picture and sit down. It’s the character that gets judged, it’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough.”
And concluded, “There’s just so many different things that come up in my face that I can’t help but see, but I fall victim to looking at things, and it really doesn’t add to your life, but it’s just so difficult. From the choices of people you date — it’s like nobody cares about those kind of things with men.”
SHE CAN’T ESCAPE EVERYONES OPINION
She’s been in a can’t win situation and no matter what she does, there will be comments. While she for sure has gotten good at ignoring things, it definitely has to have an effect on her. People commenting on her weight has to be the worst and she had this to say about it, “Everyone just has something to say, and it’s really making me sad—not even sad ‘cause, I’m not a victim, everyone—I just think it’s made me a tad bitter, and I feel really guilty for saying that, but it’s true.”
Lets do better people. We don’t need to offer an opinion on everything. As we’ve all learned in life, if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
That goes from behind a computer screen too.
