Spring Break week has arrived on Doctor Odyssey Season 1, Episode 13, and it presented many challenges for Avery, Tristan, and Max. There were some interesting medical issues to address, but we also had the opportunity to learn more about Tristan. And Rosie too. All in all, it was another entertaining hour that was also more emotional than we expected.
Fatherly Behavior

On Doctor Odyssey Season 1, Episode 12, ‘Sophisticated Ladies,’ Tristan made a vow to be a changed man and to behave more like a father. As we suspected, that promise was quickly broken. What is interesting about Tristan breaking his promise was that we think he may have intended to keep it. It seemed that after witnessing yet another interaction between Avery and Max that appeared like the two of them were growing closer, it set something off inside him. We feel for Tristan in a way because he has been left out of the loop quite a bit since Avery told him and Max she was pregnant.
As we mentioned earlier, Avery appears to be more comfortable openly sharing her decisions about her pregnancy with Max. She’s not communicating with Tristan the way we would like her to. We guess that Avery does have feelings for Tristan, and because she understands how strong his feelings are, there’s a pressure of sorts for her. Tristan loves her deeply. And we do believe he would give up anything for her. But he also needs to know that she does want him. And she’s not giving him those signals.

Dry As Dust

What we’ve enjoyed most since Doctor Odyssey began is getting to know more about each crew member. In Doctor Odyssey Episode 13, we were shown a more vulnerable side of both Rosie and Tristan. Rosie, who is one of the engineers on the Odyssey and a favorite of ours, hosts an AA meeting three days a week in her cabin. With this, we learned that she has been sober for five years. While there is always alcohol on the ship, Spring break is a time that presents even more of a challenge for every crew member with a history of addiction. That includes Tristan.
We were shocked to learn that Tristan has a drinking problem. He’s a person who always seems to have his stuff together. Now, we know he does act immature at times, but he’s never presented himself as someone who needs a drink to get through every day. Rosie noticed, though, so he wasn’t doing that great of a job hiding it.
Tristan was adamant that he did not have a problem, but based on the sweating and the vomiting he was dealing with because he hadn’t had a drink in over 24 hours, it was clear that he did. Avery noticed, and we were surprised that she handled the situation without judgment. But it helped that she did because it made Tristan feel safe enough to open up to her and Max about his father’s alcoholism. It was a moment of utter vulnerability from Tristan, and Sean Teale’s performance tugged at our heartstrings. We felt for Tristan. He wants to be a good person. And he is. Admitting he had a problem was the most significant step to take, and we were proud of him for going to Rosie’s AA meeting.
Spring Break Has Officially Broken

Max, Avery, and Tristan thought they had every I dotted and every T crossed when preparing for the spring breakers to arrive. That was until the arrival of Hannah, Steve, and the “Vixens”-Vanessa, Victoria, and Veronica. Spring break is the time when college-aged kids want to get as wild and free as possible. The behavior gets a little reckless, and the feeling of being on the high seas, for some reason, made all of them feel invincible. Unfortunately, health problems do not take a vacation. They show up when they want to.
Something we want to know every time we watch an episode of Doctor Odyssey is, where do they get their ideas from? Take Steve, for instance, who developed persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD) after his Serotonin levels dropped when he stopped taking an antidepressant. I’m a nurse and have never heard of this condition. But apparently, people who work on this Ryan Murphy show have. In the scheme of things, this wasn’t too much of an emergency, and it was quickly resolved by Max prescribing a new medication for Steve.
On the other hand, Hannah, Vanessa, and Victoria did not have such an easy go of it. And honestly, neither was Max. Hannah, who had been given a trip onboard the Odyssey as a gift from her parents, was supposed to be resting and relaxing. Studying for the LSATs was her priority, but one thing we all know is that “If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness.” Hannah learned that the hard way when her lack of healthcare led to her developing hemochromatosis. Avery was by her side every step of the way, and she encouraged Hannah to give herself a break. Though it took her a minute to allow that for herself, once she witnessed Victoria face a life-threatening health scare as well, she understood the importance.
DILF To The Rescue?

All throughout Doctor Odyssey Episode 13, the “Vixens” Vanessa, Victoria, and Veronica were trying to get Max’s attention. He was not taking the bait. Eventually, they were able to get him in their hotel room by telling him one of their girlfriends needed help. We’ll be honest, at first we thought the girls were playing a game to achieve the four-way they had been shooting for. That was until Vanessa collapsed after taking coke laced with Fentanyl. Max jumped right into action, and unfortunately for him, it almost cost him his life as he was performing CPR. Fentanyl is deadly, and even the smallest amount can kill you. Thankfully, Avery and Tristan showed up right away, and the two had to do double CPR.
Once that stressful situation was over, Avery and Tristan were forced to dive right back into another as Victoria was brought in unable to feel her legs after developing a severe case of The Bends, also known as decompression sickness, which was triggered by her having an undiscovered patent foramen ovale. One thing we can say is there is never a dull moment on the Odyssey for the medical team. And they manage to save people every single time.
Other Thoughts

- Hannah reading on the ship- yeah, that would be me too.
- So, Veronica’s real name is actually Katie, but she changed it to Veronica because it was “on brand” with the other girls having names that started with the letter “V.” It’s giving Heathers. If you know, you know.
- “I’m neither boring nor pregnant.” Rude Tristan.
- We love Rosie. That is all.
- “This is what happens when 30 tries to keep up with 20.”
- Ryan Murphy really had Joshua Jackson running… in grey sweatpants.
- We were all for Captain Massey reporting the drugs on board The Odyssey. He’s got a ship and a crew to protect. The “Vixens” got lucky. In more ways than one.
- Max and Tristan having health scares at the same time, yeah… we don’t want a repeat of that either, Avery.
- Hannah and Steve… good for you.
- Again, Sean Teale… we’re fine after watching that performance.
Doctor Odyssey airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
