The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 ‘April Fools’ was an oasis in the desert after the Chenford breakup. The episode gave us another glimpse of them as a couple, even if it was because, on that day, “nothing counts.” However, all that glitters is not gold. As much as we were looking forward to scenes like that, the episode was a step back from their journey. Ready?
Here we go!
Stumbling Twice Over the Same Stone

Let’s be clear, neither Tim nor Lucy are ready to get back together yet, no matter how much we want them to. So, getting carried away with something as absurd as a “joke” in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 ‘April Fools’ and pretending they’re ready to be together again will only hurt them further. What’s more, Lucy realized this after what happened between them on Valentine’s Day. She didn’t regret what happened, but she knew it hadn’t been the right thing to do precisely for that reason: she wasn’t ready, they weren’t ready.
Like Valentine’s Day, nothing has changed. Lucy, as she confessed in the previous episode, still hasn’t fully forgiven Tim for breaking her heart. And Tim, for his part, hasn’t yet healed all the wounds that made him run away from his relationship with Lucy. So what happened in the episode for Chenford is as if they’ve taken a step back in their journey. And it wasn’t even because they couldn’t hold back their desire for each other any longer, like on Valentine’s Day, but because of a “joke.” How pointless, really.
They seem to think, if The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 ‘April Fools’ is any indication, that everything will be fine for us as long as we see Chenford kissing and sleeping together and we won’t analyze anything further because we love them, and that’s enough to keep us happy. But nothing could be further from the truth.

Chenford’s Journey is Important

The point is, we want quality scenes that show us their journey toward reconciliation, nothing more. Not kisses or sex that came out of nowhere and was disconnected from everything else. But a coherent and organic development of the path to their reconciliation. And if what happened in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 ‘April Fools’ had led to something like that, then at least it would have been worth it. But that’s not happening.
At the end of the day, we don’t really understand how or why they set up this whole Chenford prank. There’s no clear end to it. We just went from “I haven’t forgiven you yet” to “Hey, how about we sleep together and pretend in front of everyone that we’re together?” Perhaps, someone might think that the “joke” we see in The Rookie Season 7 Episode 12 ‘April Fools’ was Lucy’s excuse to get closer to Tim, but honestly, we don’t think so. She doesn’t need that, since they’re quite close. And if that were the case, they should have developed it onscreen to make it all make sense. But they didn’t.
As it stands, no development takes us from point A to point B. Nor is there any lesson or progress for Chenford because of that “joke.” There’s nothing. Just beautiful but empty scenes. And as we’ve already said, not everything is worth seeing scenes of Chenford together. How is important. Why is important. Their journey is important. We said what we said.
