The thing about small towns is that everyone is always in everyone else’s business. You may not want people in your business (and I assure you that the people in Ransom Canyon don’t), but there they are – front and center. Your neighbor or even some old biddy across town – they know what they know. Even if what they know isn’t correct.
Gossip in a small town is currency. It can be persuasive. It can change everything. Gossip can be a way to be in control, and that, my friends, is what is happening in Ransom.
That and petty jealousy.
Speaking of petty jealousy, the person who seems to live in that state is Davis. Davis is a small, small character that wants to serve main character energy, but what he’s really got is background character energy that people get annoyed by.
Yes, I am not on the Davis train and episode 3 of Ransom Canyon solidifies my dislike of the little douchebag.
Why? Well, that would uncover itself in this episode. But it’s the last two minutes of this episode that make me realize that I am not wrong about Davis. He’s the worst.

SOMETHING ABOUT YANCY
When a man is a stranger in a small town, everyone wants to know about them. Where did they come from? Why are they here? We (me and I am speaking for all viewers) want to know more about Yancy.
And we get that here.
Yancy was in jail, but for what we do not know. He does get into a prison fight because he refuses to pick a side. Fred – who is basically the shot caller in the prison only has to move his head to have people attack Yancy.
What I also know – Yancy has an inflated sense of self. He’s got an ego which is somewhat annoying (okay, a lot) and he doesn’t seem to know when to stop himself. Is it survival? Really not sure.
Though I thought Davis sought him out, it was Yancy who sought out Davis. He had written a letter saying that he was Lincoln’s son, and that led Davis to visit him in prison. For the first time, I laughed at Davis when he told Yancy that it’s obvious he’s not a good fighter.
The two end up making a deal – Davis helps him get paroled, and he helps get Cap to sell the ranch. One has to wonder why Yancy hates Cap – if Cap is his Grandfather. Does Cap know about him? Really not sure. Would I love even a glimpse of why he does? Yes, I would. But I think it is because Cap turned his Mom away from Lincoln’s funeral.
That would be enough for me to hate someone – if I couldn’t pay my respects to the person I love.
WAIT, WHY IS HE HERE?
The thing about lies is that they have a way of coming to the surface. While some would say Yancy isn’t lying about anything, I would argue that he is. Then again, I believe in lies of omission.
When he’s in town at the hardware store, he hears a voice that he remembers. It’s people he was in prison with – people who can destroy his cover. That or they could squeeze him for money.
Davis and Yancy have every reason to be afraid of people outing them in anyway. So, they come up with a plan – one that involves switching license plates and calling the cops. Only that doesn’t work.
Yancy does cut his hand, though, when switching the plates, and you have to wonder for a second what the purpose is. But there is always a purpose for things, and that purpose is to give us a scene with Ellie and Yancy.
And we learn why she’s not nursing anymore, and she’s finding her way. Honestly, John Schumaker and Marianly Tejada have such great chemistry on the screen. The chemistry is so strong that even though you know that Yancy is lying to her, you’re still rooting for them to be together. As a viewer, you’ve accepted that you’ll hate/dislike anyone who stands in their way.
Yancy was busy on the ranch and had promised Ellie that he would be at the opening of the dance hall. Seeing him get ready with a quickness and almost forget a shirt – I loved the laughter that caused me.
But I also love that it’s a sign for me – that these two will be together, even if it is complicated.
NO WE DON’T LIKE THE SHERIFF
Last episode, Lauren’s Mom left, and that hurt. It hurt her and her Dad is definitely living in a state of delulu. He thinks she’s just basically on vacation and needed time to breathe. Ummm…. who is gonna tell him?
Lauren is so young, but she’s also dealing with so much that is tearing her apart mentally. Things that are not fair to her. Like at all.
Her Dad, the Sheriff, has to start to stay in touch with reality. It’s not okay – the way he treats people. Especially the women in his life. It’s not a big surprise that Lauren wants to run from him and Ransom.

The Sheriff is so out of touch with reality. He’s also very angry at the world. I get that he is hurt that his wife left, but no. Just no. If you’re watching this show, you know that these “men” in Ransom are a bunch of boys. I can’t see any of them growing the eff up.
When the Sheriff starts drinking at the Dance Hall opening and gets into a fight with Kit, I wanted to fly through the television and smack him. What is being like this going to help? It’s not. A bar fight is reckless and wrong. I feel like there needs to be a come to the man upstairs for him.
Especially after we find out that he blamed Lauren for everything that happened. You don’t treat your kids like that and abuse their spirit.
SENATOR S*******
Staten and his Dad don’t get along, and TBH, not sure what it is that sets them off in the past or if it is because people have passed and Daddy Kirkland wasn’t there. I am guessing that it goes back to childhood. There is just something more that we aren’t being told.
YET.
Daddy Kirkland wants the pipeline, and he’ll do anything to get it. But I also think that he does love Staten. He just doesn’t know how to show it in a healthy way. But his manipulation of people around him is gross. It’s also gross the way that he makes his son feel less than.
I think that Daddy Kirkland doesn’t know how to be honest. Does he want what is best for Staten, but that comes after what is best for himself? Maybe. But the worst thing is that he used Quinn to try to get to Staten.
AND he disrespected Staten’s wife, who had passed. He said that yes, Staten was good to her, but he’d always been in love with Quinn. To me, it came across as him saying that Amalah didn’t matter and was second best. Do we need to speak ill of the dead?
We don’t know much about Amalah, but I don’t need to. I need that to come out over time. Daddy Kirkland is just gross.
DANCE HALL
With the relaunch of the dance hall, Austin Water & Power has another foothold in the community. Realistically, they’ve had one for a bit, but as it grows, that’s definitely going to make things worse.
Staten wasn’t going to go, because he didn’t think Quinn wanted him there. But I am glad he showed up, cause the drama. I love the drama. I also ship these two so hard that it’s like give more of them to us.
Quinn and Staten are on different pages in life, but both are aching for the same page. Feelings are weird. They are going to dance around their feelings and keep screwing up communicating, but they are going to feel all the emotions.
And I am enjoying them, trying to get to a point where they can be open about them.
But enter Davis, trying to cut in and trying to call Staten out. He says that he’s only making a move on Quinn cause Davis showed interest. Words are exchanged and somehow kids are dragged into it.
And that’s not okay.
Because Staten says that Reid wasn’t the one that saved people at the ghost house. Davis grabs his son, saying to tell Staten the truth. And Reid tells his Dad the truth instead.
He wasn’t a hero.
The apologies that he gives Davis – I have never felt like someone needed to wrap Reid up in love and protect him from his Dad, even more than I did at this moment. He’s broken and for Davis – this is all about him. It’s not about his son. It’s not
TEENAGE MISTAKES
Lucas Russell is the boy that we all deserve. A boy who wants to be responsible, who loves with all his heart, and wants to be with the girl he loves. He doesn’t understand why Lauren is ghosting him, but he also doesn’t understand why the Sheriff hates Kit so much.
And he finally has the chance to talk to her about it when he finds her. She tells him what had happened, how her Dad blamed her, and how she can’t stop thinking about him. She told him that she wants to be with him, but she can’t if her Dad knows.
Lucas doesn’t want to be her secret. He can’t do it. And hey, I respected that about him. Lauren may have been heartbroken, but if the situation were reversed, she wouldn’t want that.
It’s Lucas who sets a boundary, and I know the courage that takes. He deserves a standing ovation for that. Lizzy Greene and Garrett Wareing are magic together. Teenagers are so dramatic – but we all know what it is like to feel like love is overwhelming, and it’s the end of the earth if you lose it.
Lauren is having anxiety on her drive, and I related. I related because I understood that she was loosing everything at once. What I also realized was that young love is so different than any other type of love. But we all want that can’t sleep, can’t eat, kind of love.
And as I saw Lucas run across the park to kiss her, I screamed. Get yours, sir. Get your girl.
But then we have the last two minutes of the episode, Staten is screaming at someone, pounding at the door. I was worried it was his Dad, but it wasn’t. It’s Reid, standing at the door.
Davis kicked him out.
Told you that Davis is trash.
OTHER THOUGHTS
- Yancy telling Davis is Cap doesn’t sell, he’ll take the ranch from him, is laughable
- The lean in when Yancy in the scene where he is getting stitches from Ellie – but we don’t see their faces. Did they kiss? I ship the heck out of these two.
- Ellie, I hope that we get to learn more about her and that she remains giving that main character energy
- Fred finding Yancy and saying lets go for a walk. I am a little afraid of what we’re gonna find out about Yancy from this walk.
- Yancy calming Ellie with the twinkle lights… I screamed at my TV to KISS THE GIRL
- Quinn’s sister looking out for her is sweet, but she’s grown, so stay in your lane
- Men and their bar fights. It tracks
- Staten confronting the Sheriff, I laughed because it solidified for me that the Sheriff is a moron
- Katherine, The New York Philharmonic lady, found Quinn in Texas. She really is meant for more.
- Davis has an angle with Quinn, and I don’t know what it is, but hey, here we are.
- Davis is trash
