At the moment, TV shows aren’t sparking the same joy they tend to. As we reach finale season, we’re bound to get more shocking twists and turns than neat little bows. Thankfully, even when matters aren’t great or lovely, CBS’ Ghosts is a comedy we can rely on and trust. That’s why, despite the wild cliffhanger in the Ghosts Season 4 finale, we can be sure of the fact that we’ll return to Woodstone for more hijinks and resolutions.
What Happens to Jay in the Ghosts Season 4 Finale?

Since “Alexander Hamilton and the Ruffle Kerfuffle,” it was safe to expect Elias Woodstone’s return from hell. Yet, despite the fact that in that same episode, viewers don’t actually see Jay signing the contract (which enlists Elias as his new publicist because he wants to talk to Sam first), it makes total sense that in true Jay fashion, he’d like to be a cutie and surprise his wife. In other words, the fact that he signs it without telling her is both wildly unexpected and simultaneously understandable.
That said, Jay’s soul is now—temporarily—doomed. If he should’ve learned anything from his financial advisor, Trevor, it was to read the fine print. But that’s also expecting a lot out of any human let alone someone who’s just excited to make their restaurant dreams come true. Still, and once again, Ghosts isn’t a drama like 9-1-1 or The Last of Us. The show isn’t going to kill off its characters for the sake of realism because that’s not the show’s brand. And though we can be sure that Jay will be tested, and the arc will likely last a few episodes (maybe even a full season), the residents at Woodstone protect their own. None of them are going to let Elias take Jay’s soul. No matter how hard he tries, and that’s a comforting thought to sit with.

Still, the Ghosts Season 4 finale also sets up the high stakes of this situation by delivering this news at a time when things are finally looking up for Sam and Jay. And though we can be confident in the fact that everything will work out, it wouldn’t be surprising if the series utilized every threatening force to really ensure that we see Elias’ level of evil. It’s not going to be a walk in the park. But with everything the show has proven so far, it’ll be worth it.
More Ghosts Couple Up
At this point, we might actually be able to get away with calling Ghosts a romance. The Season 4 finale makes another couple canon. After years of pining for Alberta, the episode gives viewers a classic rom-com moment where Pete hears all about how Alberta now has feelings for him. It feels like the right time for the two of them to actually make things work. After all, we’ve gotten more insight into both of their love lives this season. We already know that Alberta regrets breaking her lover’s heart to choose music when she was alive, so it makes perfect sense that she’d feel the pangs of losing out on love one more time because she waited too long.
At the same time, Pete needed to date someone else. Just for let go of his love for Alberta to really understand that it was real after all. The right person and the wrong time. But today, the stars align for the two of them as they actually choose each other at the same time. Now, whether they’ll last or realize that they’re better off as friends, only time will tell. But for a finale that would’ve otherwise been too angsty, it’s nice to get a bit of fluff to hold onto.
Ghosts Season 4 is now streaming on Paramount+.
